Dynamics In Magnetized Interstellar Gas
نویسندگان
چکیده
Interstellar medium is turbulent and this induces relative motions of dust grains. We calculate relative velocities of charged grains in a partially ionized magnetized gas. We account for anisotropy of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence, grain coupling with magnetic field, and the turbulence cutoff arising from the ambipolar drag. We obtain grain velocities for turbulence with parameters consistent with those in HI and dark clouds. Those velocities are smaller than those in earlier papers, where MHD effects were disregarded. Finally, we compare grain velocities arising from photoelectric emission, radiation pressure and H 2 thrusts. We conclude that turbulence should prevent segregation of grains of different sizes.

متن کاملMagnetohydrodynamic Density Waves in a Composite Disk System of Interstellar Medium and Cosmic-Ray Gas
Multi-wavelength observations from radio to soft X-ray bands of large-scale galactic spiral structures offer synthesized and comprehensive views of nearby disk galaxies. In the presence of a massive dark-matter halo, the density-wave dynamics on galactic scales involves the stellar disk, the gas disk of interstellar medium (ISM), the magnetic field, and the cosmic-ray gas (CRG). In this paper, ...
متن کاملInterstellar Turbulence Driving by Galactic Spiral Shocks
Spiral shocks are potentially a major source of turbulence in the interstellar medium. To address this problem quantitatively, we use numerical simulations to investigate gas flow across spiral arms in vertically stratified, self-gravitating, magnetized models of galactic disks. Our models are isothermal, quasi-axisymmetric, and local in the quasi-radial direction while global in the vertical d...
متن کاملGlobal galactic dynamo driven by cosmic-rays and exploding magnetized stars
We report first results of first global galactic-scale CR-MHD simulations of cosmicray-driven dynamo. We investigate the dynamics of magnetized interstellar medium (ISM), which is dynamically coupled with the cosmic-ray (CR) gas. We assume that exploding stars deposit small-scale, randomly oriented, dipolar magnetic fields into the differentially rotating ISM, together with a portion of cosmic ...
متن کاملThe Distribution of Pressures in a Supernova-Driven Interstellar Medium. I. Magnetized Medium
Observations have suggested substantial departures from pressure equilibrium in the interstellar medium (ISM) in the plane of the Galaxy, even on scales under 50 pc. Nevertheless, multi-phase models of the ISM assume at least locally isobaric gas. The pressure then determines the density reached by gas cooling to stable thermal equilibrium. We use numerical models of the magnetized ISM to exami...
