Emission of Positron Annihilation Line Radiation by Clusters of Galaxies
نویسنده
چکیده
Clusters of galaxies are enriched with positrons from jets of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) or from the interaction of cosmic-rays with the intracluster gas. We follow the cooling of these positrons and show that their eventual annihilation with cluster electrons yields a narrow annihilation line. Unlike annihilation in the interstellar medium of galaxies, the line produced in clusters is not smeared by three-photon decay of positronium, because positronium formation is suppressed at the high (& 1 keV) temperature of the cluster electrons. We show that if AGN jets are composed of ee pairs, then the annihilation line from rich clusters within a distance of 100 Mpc might be detectable with future space missions, such as INTEGRAL or EXIST. Search for Electron-positron Annihilation Radiation from the Jet in 3c 120
We report an attempt to detect the electron-positron annihilation line from the radio galaxy 3C 120, in which the jet interacts strongly with interstellar clouds. Such interactions should cause most of the jet plasma tomix with the gas in the clouds. This will thermalize the majority of any positrons in the jet, leading to continuous annihilation with ambient electrons. We derive the number den...
متن کاملPositron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy in nickel ferrite and iron oxide nanopowders
In this study, a positron annihilation lifetime spectrometer was set up and its resolution was optimized. The spectrometer is a fast-slow arrangement with time resolution of 250 ps. To obtain lifetime components and their intensities from analyzing positron annihilation lifetime spectrum, the Pascual software is used. Positrons are from a source of radioactive 22NaCl with 20 μCi activity enclos...
متن کاملEMISSION-LINE OBJECTS FROM A PRELIMINARY UKST OBJECTIVE PRISM SURVEY
A visual search has been made of four fields using United Kingdom 1.2m Schmidt Objective Prism plates with a reciprocal dispersion of 1 180 A/mm at HP. Such plate material is ideally suited to searches for emission-line galaxies. We present a catalogue of 53 emission-line objects, which comprises 45 galaxies, where individual HI1 regions are resolved in 16 bright galaxies; 8 are emission li...
متن کاملAGN Zoo and Classications of Active Galaxies
We review the variety of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) classes (so-calledAGN zoo") and classification schemes of galaxies by activity types based on their optical emission-line spectrum, as well as other parameters and other than optical wave-length ranges. A historical overview of discoveries of various types of active galaxies is given, including Seyfert galaxies, radio galaxies, QSOs, BL Lace...
متن کاملun 2 00 1 Comparative Studies of Line and Continuum Positron Annihilation Radiation
Positron annihilation radiation from the Galaxy has been observed by the OSSE, SMM and TGRS instruments. Improved spectral modeling of OSSE observations has allowed studies of the distribution of both positron annihilation radiation components, the narrow line emission at 511 keV and the positronium continuum emission. The results derived for each individual annihilation component are then comp...
