چکیده

Normal faeces contain both coproporphyrin and protoporphyrin in very small quantities. These arise in part as by-products from haem synthesis which are excreted via the bile into the gut, in part from degradation of ingested haem, and possibly also in part by bacterial synthesis in the intestine. In adults normal values (Barnes, 1957) are: coproporphyrin, 0-15 ug. per g. dry weight; and protoporphyrin, 0-45 .lAg. per g. dry weight. The purpose of this investigation was to establish normal values in babies from birth up to 1 year of age. Only one reference in the literature has been found to porphyrin determinations in babies and children (Fokina, 1947), but, whereas Fokina has estimated average faecal elimination values per 24 hours, these values are expressed as micrograms per gramme dry weight and therefore the two investigations are not strictly comparable.

Evaluation of a first-line spectrophotometric screening test for increased faecal porphyrin concentration.

We compared a spectrophotometric screening test measuring faecal porphyrin concentration with an HPLC method. There was a good overall correlation between both methods although some scatter was observed. ROC plot analysis of the screening test leads to a cut-off value of 35 nmol porphyrin per g faeces, wet weight with a sensitivity of 97% and a specificity of 96%. These results indicate that th...

Thermodynamic of Interaction between Some Water-Soluble Porphyrins and DNA by Titration Microcalorimetry

In the present work, the interaction of three water soluble porphyrins, tetra (p-trimethyle) ammoniumphenyl porphyrin iodide (TAPP) as a cationic porphyrin, tetra sodium meso-tetrakis (p-sulphonatophenyle) porphyrin (TSPP) as an anionic porphyrin and manganese tetrakis (p-sulphonato phenyl)porphinato acetate (MnTSPP) as a metal porphyrin, with DNA have been studied by isothermaltitration microc...

Diet and faecal flora in the newborn: iron.

The faecal flora of a baby receiving a modern infant formula is substantially different from that of a breast fed baby. This difference is a little less when whey based formulas are used. The addition of bovine lactoferrin has no effect and there is some evidence that the presence of added iron in a formula moved the faecal flora further away from that of a breast fed baby. the iron content of ...

Asymptomatic neonatal colonisation by Clostridium difficile.

In a prospective survey of infants born in a single maternity unit, asymptomatic faecal colonisation by Clostridium difficile occurred in 31 (47%) of 66 babies who provided a faecal sample during week one of life and at age 14 and 28 days, and in 46 (30.7%) of the total of 150 babies for whom at least one faecal sample was obtained during the month of study. There was no evidence for acquisitio...

Comparison of kinetic study and protective effects of biological dipeptide and two porphyrin derivatives against metal cytotoxicity in human lymphocytes

In this research, dipeptide (his-β-alanine) and porphyrin derivatives were choosen for comparing chelating ability of toxic metals such as Al3+, Cu2+, Hg2+ and Pb2+ in vitro. The reason for choosing these two compounds is that both of them are naturally present in biological systems and comparison of chelating ability of these two compounds has not yet been done. Synthesis and comparison of kin...
