Models of Vegetative Change for Landscape Planning: A Comparison of FETM, LANDSUM, SIMPPLLE, and VDDT
نویسنده
چکیده
________________________________________ Landscape assessment and planning often depend on the ability to predict change of vegetation. This report compares four modeling systems (FETM, LANDSUM, SIMPPLLE, and VDDT) that can be used to understand changes resulting from succession, natural disturbance, and management activities. The four models may be useful for regional or local assessments in National Forest planning rules. Although these models are limited in their ability to support site-specific decisionmaking, they can prove helpful in understanding and comparing strongly differentiated alternatives. They can also be used to make sure that interdisciplinary planning teams share a common base of knowledge. Since all four models are still evolving, increased validation and documentation should develop over time. This report includes a comparison of the models in terms of purpose, data requirements, use, and outputs. It is intended to provide planners with a general introduction to the use of these models within a landscape assessment process.

Climate change effects on historical range and variability of two large landscapes in western Montana, USA
Quantifying the historical range and variability of landscape composition and structure using simulation modeling is becoming an important means of assessing current landscape condition and prioritizing landscapes for ecosystem restoration. However, most simulated time series are generated using static climate conditions which fail to account for the predicted major changes in future climate. T...

Ecological destruction in human-dominated landscapes has significant impacts on environment sustainability internationally. Landscape planning can play a role in mitigating the effects of human-related activities. One element of landscape planning involves the analysis of the biological, spatial and social arrangement of areas in an urban environment and identifying characteristics that are und...

Today, environmental crisis and loss of natural resources are the principle causes of the creation of environmental management systems. The optimal management of natural resources requires the assessment and classification of ecological and environmental potentials. Using this method, the abilities and restrictions of resources can be recognized, and their future trends can be predicted. Nebka ...
متن کاملThe history relating to the changing nature of protected area management objectives: towards reconciliation with surrounding landscape
Natural areas have been reserved for thousands of years. However, the reasons for reservation have changed with time. Natural areas management objectives have changed from personal/individual human needs to environmental protection. Unlike old protected areas, new protected areas have multiple management objectives. The management objectives changed from protection for now to protection for the...
متن کاملPredicting Landscape Vegetation Dynamics Using State-and-Transition Simulation Models
This paper outlines how state-and-transition simulation models (STSMs) can be used to project changes in vegetation over time across a landscape. STSMs are stochastic, empirical simulation models that use an adapted Markov chain approach to predict how vegetation will transition between states over time, typically in response to interactions between succession, disturbances and management. With...
