چکیده
Fox, B. (1971). Archives of Disease in Childhood, 46, 680. Disseminated intravascular coagulation and the Waterhouse-Friderichsen syndrome. In a clinico-pathological study of 13 children who died with Waterhouse-Friderichsen syndrome, there were deposits of fibrin in many organs, especially the adrenal glands and the kidneys. This finding supports the hypothesis that disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) occurs in this syndrome. The exact role that DIC plays has not been defined; though it probably contributes to the severe shock and the widespread haemorrhages; the adrenal haemorrhages appear not to be due directly to DIC. The presence of DIC in the Waterhouse-Friderichsen syndrome suggests that heparin should be a logical form of treatment.

Pneumococcal Waterhouse-Friderichsen syndrome despite a normal spleen.
A previously fit 56 year old female presented with a rapidly progressive and fatal pneumococcal septicaemia with disseminated intravascular coagulation. Post-mortem studies confirmed a Waterhouse-Friderichsen syndrome and revealed an anatomically normal spleen; intracellular diplococci were seen within splenic macrophages providing evidence of normal splenic function. This appears to be only th...

Coagulation in Meningococcal Infection Sir, The description by Fox in the recent issue of the Archives (October 1971) of histological evidence of widespread intravascular coagulation in 13 patients dying of the Waterhouse-Friderichsen syndrome (with proved meningococcal septicaemia in two) and his suggestion that heparin should be used in such patients, prompts us to report the following patient:-
متن کاملFatal purpura fulminans and Waterhouse-Friderichsen syndrome from fulminant Streptococcus pneumoniae sepsis in an asplenic young adult
Asplenic patients are at increased risk for sepsis and fulminant infection. Sepsis in these patients is typically secondary to encapsulated bacteria, with Streptococcus pneumoniae being the most frequent pathogen. Rare complications of severe sepsis include purpura fulminans and bilateral adrenal hemorrhage (Waterhouse-Friderichsen syndrome). We present the case of a 36-year-old woman, healthy ...
متن کاملPostmortem detection of Neisseria Meningitidis in a case of Waterhouse- Friderichsen syndrome from fulminant meningococcal disease in an adult patient
Waterhouse-Friderichsen syndrome (WFS) from meningococceal sepsis is a rare life-threatening condition which generally occur during infancy and childhood with a high mortality rate (from 10-30% up to 95%). It is very rare in the adult population, usually with pathological risk factors of invasive meningococcal infection. In such fatalities, the condition may rapidly progress into septic shock a...

We report a case of meningococcemia in a 49-year old woman, who was admitted to the Second Department of Anesthesia and Intensive Care of the IRCCS Policlinico San Matteo of Pavia (Italy) because of an altered mental status and widespread petechiae. The day before she felt sleepy and dizzy; in the following hours she experienced a severe clinical deterioration with fever, general pain, confusio...
