Expandable metal stents for tracheal obstruction: permanent or temporary? A cautionary tale.

چکیده
An expandable metal stent inserted via a long term tracheostomy successfully relieved life threatening respiratory obstruction due to benign tracheal stenosis. Later the patient's tracheostomy suction catheter became stuck on the stent and dislodged it. The stent was removed electively, without damaging the trachea, with a rigid biopsy forceps.

Mechanical properties and in vitro degradation of bioresorbable fibers and expandable fiber-based stents.
Bioresorbable polymeric support devices (stents) are being developed in order to improve the biocompatibility and drug reservoir capacity of metal stents, as well as to offer a temporary alternative to permanent metallic stents. These temporary devices may be utilized for coronary, urethral, tracheal, and other applications. The present study focuses on the mechanical properties of bioresorbabl...

OBJECTIVE To evaluate the potential utility of a new endoscopically placed expandable tracheal stent in the treatment of benign symptomatic stenoses of the cervical trachea. STUDY DESIGN Pilot study utilizing a prospectively followed case series. METHODS An initial group of six patients undergoing stent placement was examined with rigid and flexible endoscopy under anesthesia immediately fo...
متن کاملExpandable metal stents for the treatment of esophageal malignant obstruction.
Esophageal cancer is the sixth leading cause of death from cancer worldwide [1]. Due to the esophagus distensible characteristics, patients may not recognize any symptoms until 50% of the luminal diameter is compromised explaining why cancer of the esophagus is generally associated with late presentation and poor prognosis [2]. Esophageal stents are devices used to maintain or restore the lumen...
متن کاملMetallic expandable stents in the management of malignant tracheal stenosis due to esophageal cancer with lymph node metastasis
Esophageal cancer with post-operative lymph node metastasis (LNM) compressing and infiltrating the trachea causing dyspnea is considered a serious complication. However, chemotherapy or radiotherapy are often ineffective methods for such patients. Approaches employing metallic expandable stents to relieve airway obstruction are extremely effective in advanced-stage cancer patients. The present ...
متن کاملSelf-expandable metallic tracheobronchial stent insertion and endobronchial electrocautery with flexible bronchoscopy: preliminary results at a cancer center.
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Technical developments have facilitated the implantation of metallic stents and the use of endobronchial electrocautery through a flexible bronchoscope to reestablish airway patency in patients with airway obstruction. Their application in a 180-bed cancer center is described. PATIENTS AND METHODS From August 2000 to December 2001, 12 patients (2 women, 10 men, mean age...
