Semiclassical model for the formation of Rydberg molecules

چکیده
A fascinating aspect of Rydberg atoms is their ability to form huge but very weakly bound molecules with a ground state atom, only held together by a scattering process between the latter and the Rydberg electron. Beyond the usual way of creating such molecules by laser excitation from two ground state atoms with a distance of less than the Rydberg radius, we demonstrate that Rydberg molecules can also be formed by capturing an initially faraway ground state atom when it comes in contact with a Rydberg atom. To demonstrate this effect, we investigate the scattering process between the Rydberg electron and the ground state atom within a semiclassical framework. In this picture capturing results from a dissipative finite-mass correction term in the classical equations of motion. We show that and under which conditions the capturing takes place. Rydberg molecules in external fields: a semiclassical analysis.
We analyze the spectra of simple Rydberg molecules in static fields within the framework of closed/periodic-orbit theories. We conclude that in addition to the usual classical orbits one must consider classically forbidden diffractive paths. Further, the molecule brings in a new type of "inelastic" diffractive trajectory in addition to the usual "elastic" diffractive orbits encountered in syste...

متن کاملGeneral Rydberg Atoms in Crossed Electric and Magnetic Fields: Calculation of Semiclassical Recurrence Spectra with Special Emphasis on Core Effects
The photoabsorption spectra of highly excited Rydberg atoms in external fields are known to be related to closed classical orbits of the excited electron. For atoms in a pure magnetic field, scaled recurrence spectra have successfully been calculated from classical orbits using the semiclassical closed-orbit theory. Rydberg atoms in crossed fields are more complicated as regards their theoretic...

The so called unidentified infrared (UIR) emission bands, observed from interstellar space for more than 25 years, are presently believed to be due to carbonaceous material in some form, for example polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). However, the evidence is based on absorption data, which clearly is not adequate due to differences in the processes, for example the thermal factor. It also...
متن کاملRydberg-atom trajectories in a ponderomotive optical lattice
Using semiclassical simulations, we investigate the trajectories and the microwave spectra of Rydberg atoms excited in a ponderomotive optical lattice. We relate distinct features found in the microwave spectra to characteristic types of trajectory. Several methods are presented that are designed to greatly improve the trapping efficiency of the lattice and to generalize the trapping from one t...
