Umbilical and supraumbilical catheter insertion is a common procedure performed in the NICU. It is a safe and usually easy procedure devoid of serious mishaps, morbidity and mortality. Complications such as hemorrhage, infection, hernia, evisceration, omphalitis, portal vein thrombosis and portal hypertension may occur after umbilical catheter insertion. متن کاملDoes umbilical cord bilirubin level have predictive value in pathologic neonatal hyperbilirubinemia?
Introduction The increase in the use of breast feeding and the decrease in mothers' hospitalization in the past few years have caused an increase in the infant bilirubin level, so it is necessary to introduce methods which can identify infants with higher risks of hyperbiliru binemia. The aim of this study is to determine the predictive value of measuring the umbilical cord bilirubin for patho...

Background and purpose : Âfter decades of discussion and debate, there is little agreement about appropriate time to clamp the umbilical cord after birth. With late cordclamping, neonate receives more placental transfusion that may affect blood hematocrit level. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of early and late cordclamping on neonatal polycythemia at 2h and 18h after bir...
متن کاملThe Prevalence of Portal Vein Thrombosis in Children under 3 Years Old with History of Neonatal Umbilical Vein Catheterization in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
Background Portal vein thrombosis (PVT) is one of the most common causes of extrahepatic portal hypertension in children, which may follow neonatal umbilical vein catheterization. The incidence rates of catheter-related PVT, in infants and children vary in different studies. This study aimed to determine PVT incidence in the children under 3 years old with a history of neonatal umbilical vein c...
متن کاملUmbilical Arteriovenous Malformation in a Healthy Neonate with Umbilical Hernia
We describe the case of a neonate with an umbilical hernia and persistent wet umbilicus. Examination revealed a pulsatile umbilical cord with palpable thrill. Doppler ultrasound suspected umbilical arteriovenous malformation and contrast-enhanced computed tomography was performed leading to a definitive diagnosis. Surgery was successfully performed on day 27.
