Predicting landslides in clearcut patches
نویسنده
چکیده
Accelerated erosion in the form of landslides can be an undesirable consequence of clearcut logging on steep slopes. Forest managers need a method of predicting the risk of such erosion. Data collected after logging in a granitic area of northwestern California were used to develop a predictive equation. A linear discriminant function was developed that correctly classified almost 90% of the data. The equation was based on measurements of slope, crown cover, tributary drainage area, and distance from a stream. A procedure was then developed by which the discriminant function can be used to determine the optimum strategy for managing landslide-susceptible terrain.

Predicting landslides probabilities along mountain road in Taiwan
This paper gives a brief introduction on the background and current status of landslides along mountain roads in Taiwan and presents a detailed analysis based on the Gaussian Process model for predicting locations and occurrence times of future landslides using historical data. Based on inherent and man-made features of failed and not-failed slopes, locations of possible future landslides are p...
متن کاملAccounting for the stochastic occurrence of landslides when predicting sediment yields
Landslides may lead to sedimentation of streams and rivers in tropical environments over time periods of decades. Hence, it is important to account for the stochastic occurrence of landslides when predicting sediment yields, particularly in areas undergoing deforestation. A hillslope-stability simulation model is developed based on applying an infinite slope stability analysis and the groundwat...

Background and objective: Landslide susceptibility zoning using different methods is one of the landslide management strategies. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the landslides susceptibility in the Bar watershed in Khorasan Razavi province using the support vector machine (SVM) algorithm. Method: First, the landslide layer of the area was corrected through field visits and Google Earth...
متن کاملDoes Proximity to Wetland Shrubland Increase the Habitat Value for Shrubland Birds of Small Patches of Upland Shrubland in the Northeastern United States?
The loss of shrubland habitat is linked to population declines formanywildlife species, including several bird species of conservation concern. Conservation agencies in the northeastern United States encourage private landowners to clearcut patches of forest to create shrubland habitat. Many private landowners are only willing to create small clearcuts; therefore, it is important to understand ...
متن کاملNumerical Modeling of water-waves induced by landslides with WC-MPS method
The rapid movement of sediments, which is often induced by a very erosive and transient flow in rivers and rivers, causes a lot of geomorphology and engineering problems. Failure of the dam with a moving bed, submerged landslide, sedimentation flushing in reservoirs are just a few examples of these problems. The study of waves is challenging due to the interference of several complex physical p...
