Solid solution strengthening and softening due to collective nanocrystalline deformation physics

چکیده

Solid solution effects on the strength of the finest nanocrystalline grain sizes are studied with molecular dynamics simulations of different Cu-based alloys. We find evidence of both solid solution strengthening and softening, with trends in strength controlled by how alloying affects the elastic modulus of the material. This behavior is consistent with a shift to collective grain boundary deformation physics, and provides a link between the mechanical behavior of very fine-grained nanocrystalline metals and metallic glasses. 2014 Acta Materialia Inc. Enhanced solid solution effects on the strength of nanocrystalline alloys

Solid solution strengthening in nanocrystalline alloys is studied using sputtered Ni–W as a model system. In the composition range of 0–20 at.% W, the sputtered alloys have a nanocrystalline structure with a grain size that is independent of composition. Nanoindentation of these alloys shows that solute addition increases strength to very high levels, almost in proportion to the solute content....

Size-dependent deformation in nanograins and nanotwins

This paper discusses three aspects that have not been looked into within mechanistic model for rationalizing observed behavior of nanocrystalline materials. (1) For the nano-materials with low energy barrier to emit the trailing partial after the leading partial, such as nanocrystalline Al (nc-Al), both partials extend intra-granularly in strengthening effect. (2) In the transition grain-size r...

Nanocrystalline Alloys: Enhanced Strengthening Mechanisms and Mechanically-Driven Structural Evolution

Nanocrystalline materials have experienced a great deal of attention in recent years, largely due to their impressive array of physical properties. In particular, nanocrystalline mechanical behavior has been of interest, as incredible strengths are predicted when grain size is reduced to the nanometer range. The vast majority of research to this point has focused on quantifying and understandin...

Nanoindentation studies of FeXN „XÄTa, Ti... soft magnetic films

Nanomechanical characterization of thin FeXN ~X5Ta, Ti! films deposited by cosputtering from Fe, Ta and Ti targets on a Si/SiO2 substrate has been conducted using a nanoindenter. To fully understand the influence of the substrate on the measurement of film properties a continuous measure of the hardness and modulus as a function of depth was performed. The hardness of both FeTa and FeTi films w...

The Strain Dependence of Post-Deformation Softening during the Hot Deformation of 304H Stainless Steel

Experiments were carried out in which the dependence of the fractional softening on temperature, time and strain rate was determined in a 304H stainless steel. Three prestrain ranges were identified pertaining to three different post-deformation softening behaviors: 1) prestraining to below the DRX critical strain: strongly strain dependent softening by SRX alone with softening kinetics control...
