چکیده

A B S T R A C T Total and filaria-specific immunoglobulin E (IgE) levels were studied in cord blood from infants born in Madras, India, where filariasis and intestinal helminth infections are highly endemic. Increased total IgE levels were observed in 82% of 57 cord sera tested (geometric mean 12.6 ng/ml; range 1-1,900 ng/ml). 33 of these sera also contained IgE antibodies specific for flarial antigens as determined by solid-phase radioimmunoassay. Comparison of ratios of filaria-specific IgE to total IgE in paired maternal and cord sera suggested that cord blood IgE was derived from the fetus in most cases and not from transplacental antibody transfer. Our results suggest that prenatal allergic sensitization to helminth parasites occurs in the tropics. Such sensitization may contribute to the heterogeneity in host immune response and disease expression noted in filariasis and other helminth infections.

Anti-filarial and total IgG4 and IgE antibody levels are correlated in mothers and their offspring.

In mothers who suffer from helminth infections or allergic diseases, prenatal sensitization with antigens/allergens is suspected to bias the immune system of the offspring towards a Th2-type response. To investigate this at the antibody level, we collected 113 blood samples on filter paper from a paediatric population aged 3 months to 10 years and their mothers, who resided in an area endemic f...

The development of TH2 responses from infancy to 4 years of age and atopic sensitization in areas endemic for helminth infections

BACKGROUND Helminth infections and allergies are associated with TH2 responses. Whereas the development of TH2 responses and allergic disorders in pediatric populations has been examined in affluent countries, no or little data exist from low income regions of the world. The aim of this study is to examine factors influencing the development of TH2 responses of children born in areas endemic fo...

Impact of helminth infection on childhood allergic diseases in an area in transition from high to low infection burden

BACKGROUND The effect of helminth infections on allergic diseases is still inconclusive. Furthermore, the effect of helminth infections on childhood allergic diseases in a tropical area where prevalence of helminth infections has undergone dramatic changes is not well documented. OBJECTIVE To investigate the relationship between allergic diseases and helminth infection in a cohort of schoolch...

Chronic Helminth Infections Protect Against Allergic Diseases by Active Regulatory Processes

Developed countries are suffering from an epidemic rise in immunologic disorders, such as allergy-related diseases and certain autoimmunities. Several studies have demonstrated a negative association between helminth infections and inflammatory diseases (eg, allergy), providing a strong case for the involvement of helminth infections in this respect. However, some studies point in the opposite ...

Prenatal exposure, maternal sensitization, and sensitization in utero to indoor allergens in an inner-city cohort.

Primary sensitization to antigens may occur prenatally. We hypothesized that high prenatal exposure to indoor antigens increases the risk for sensitization in newborns in New York City populations with increased risk for asthma. We also investigated whether maternal sensitization is required for in utero sensitization to occur. One hundred sixty-seven pregnant African American or Dominican wome...
