Pushdown Compression

چکیده
The pressing need for efficient compression schemes for XML documents has recently been focused on stack computation [6, 9], and in particular calls for a formulation of information-lossless stack or pushdown compressors that allows a formal analysis of their performance and a more ambitious use of the stack in XML compression, where so far it is mainly connected to parsing mechanisms. In this paper we introduce the model of pushdown compressor, based on pushdown transducers that compute a single injective function while keeping the widest generality regarding stack computation. The celebrated Lempel-Ziv algorithm LZ78 [10] was introduced as a general purpose compression algorithm that outperforms finite-state compressors on all sequences. We compare the performance of the Lempel-Ziv algorithm with that of the pushdown compressors, or compression algorithms that can be implemented with a pushdown transducer. This comparison is made without any a priori assumption on the data’s source and considering the asymptotic compression ratio for infinite sequences. We prove that Lempel-Ziv is incomparable with pushdown compressors.

Polylog Space Compression Is Incomparable with Lempel-Ziv and Pushdown Compression
This paper considers online compression algorithms that use at most polylogarithmic space (plogon). These algorithms correspond to compressors in the data stream model. We study the performance attained by these algorithms and show they are incomparable with both pushdown compressors and the Lempel-Ziv compression algorithm.
متن کاملBounded Pushdown Dimension vs Lempel Ziv Information Density
In this paper we introduce a variant of pushdown dimension called bounded pushdown (BPD) dimension, that measures the density of information contained in a sequence, relative to a BPD automata, i.e. a finite state machine equipped with an extra infinite memory stack, with the additional requirement that every input symbol only allows a bounded number of stack movements. BPD automata are a natur...
متن کاملOn the Reachability Analysis of Acyclic Networks of Pushdown Systems
We address the reachability problem in acyclic networks of pushdown systems. We consider communication based either on shared memory or on message passing through unbounded lossy channels. We prove mainly that the reachability problem between recognizable sets of configurations (i.e., definable by a finite union of products of finite-state automata) is decidable for such networks, and that for ...
متن کاملVisibly Pushdown Games
The class of visibly pushdown languages has been recently defined as a subclass of context-free languages with desirable closure properties and tractable decision problems. We study visibly pushdown games, which are games played on visibly pushdown systems where the winning condition is given by a visibly pushdown language. We establish that, unlike pushdown games with pushdown winning conditio...
متن کاملLeaf languages and string compression ∗ Markus
Tight connections between leafs languages and strings compressed via straight-line programs (SLPs) are established. It is shown that the compressed membership problem for a language L is complete for the leaf language class defined by L via logspace machines. A more difficult variant of the compressed membership problem for L is shown to be complete for the leaf language class defined by L via ...
