چکیده

The last two decades have produced significant advances in our theoretical understanding of cardiac pacing. The bidomain model, a mathematical representation of the anisotropic electrical properties of cardiac tissue, has provided insight into many long-standing mysteries of pacing, such as the mechanisms of make and break excitation, the shape of the strength-interval curve, and the induction of reentry by burst pacing. This paper reviews the application of the bidomain model to these and other topics, and summarizes our theoretical understanding of how electrical excitation of

A novel mechanism of anode-break stimulation predicted by bidomain modeling.

-Anodal stimulation by external pacemakers has been explained on the basis of bidomain models of cardiac tissue. Bidomain models predict that anodal stimuli will hyperpolarize the underlying tissue while adjacent regions become depolarized (virtual cathodes), initiating excitation. We investigated the contribution of active cellular properties to anode-break stimulation. A bidomain model was im...

Electrical Pacing of Cardiac Tissue Including Potassium Inward Rectification

In this study cardiac tissue is stimulated electrically through a small unipolar electrode. Numerical simulations predict that around an electrode are adjacent regions of depolarization and hyperpolarization. Experiments have shown that during pacing of resting cardiac tissue the hyperpolarization is often inhibited. Our goal is to determine if the inward rectifying potassium current (IK1) caus...

Computer simulations of successful defibrillation in decoupled and non-uniform cardiac tissue.

AIM The aim of the present study is to investigate the origin and effect of virtual electrode polarization in uniform, decoupled and non-uniform cardiac tissue during field stimulation. METHODS A discrete bidomain model with active membrane behaviour was used to simulate normal cardiac tissue as well as cardiac tissue that is decoupled due to fibrosis and gap junction remodelling. Various uni...

Cell and tissue responses to electric shocks.

AIM Existing models of myocardial membrane kinetics have not been able to reproduce the experimentally-observed negative bias in the asymmetry of transmembrane potential changes (DeltaV(m)) induced by strong electric shocks. The goals of this study are (1) to demonstrate that this negative bias could be reproduced by the addition, to the membrane model, of electroporation and an outward current...

A Numerical Study of Scalable Cardiac Electro-Mechanical Solvers on HPC Architectures

We introduce and study some scalable domain decomposition preconditioners for cardiac electro-mechanical 3D simulations on parallel HPC (High Performance Computing) architectures. The electro-mechanical model of the cardiac tissue is composed of four coupled sub-models: (1) the static finite elasticity equations for the transversely isotropic deformation of the cardiac tissue; (2) the active te...
