State dependence and heterogeneity in fishing location choice

چکیده

To explore the distinction between state dependence and heterogeneity in repeated decisions, this paper combines a Mixed Logit model with a state dependence parameterization from the marketing literature to study fishing location choices of commercial sea urchin divers in California. It examines implications of ignoring either effect and finds in all cases that true state dependence is an important determinant of location choice. Consequently, spatial policies like marine reserves can lead to differences in the shortand long-run behavioral responses of the fishing fleet. Under some specifications, random preference parameters are statistically significant when state dependence is excluded from the model, but when it is included, random preference parameters are not significant. In other specifications, including state dependence only dampens the variability in preference parameters. These results highlight the importance of gathering and analyzing diary-type data for commercial fisheries as well as for similar choice problems in recreation demand. r 2005 Elsevier Inc. Similar individuals facing the same set of choices often make different choices

This paper explores the classic distinction between state dependence and heterogeneity in repeated decisions. Specifically, it combines a Mixed Multinomial Logit model with a state dependence parameterization from the marketing literature on brand loyalty to study repeated fishing location choices of commercial sea urchin divers in California. The econometric model relies on simulation-based es...

Exploiting the Choice-consumption Mismatch: a New Approach to Disentangle State Dependence and Heterogeneity

This paper offers a new identification strategy for disentangling structural state dependence from unobserved heterogeneity in preferences. Our strategy exploits market environments where there is a choice-consumption mismatch. We first demonstrate the effectiveness of our identification strategy in obtaining unbiased state dependence estimates via Monte Carlo analysis and highlight its superio...

Risk sensitivity and the behaviour of fishing vessels

Risk sensitivity is an important component of fisher behaviour, yet its impact on fisher decision-making and utility is poorly understood. Here, we incorporate various forms of risk in a model of location choice by fishing vessels targeting broadbill swordfish, Xiphias gladius, and evaluate the importance of risk sensitivity for predicting location, perceived utility and profit over a fishing s...

Investigating Preference Heterogeneity in a Repeated Discrete-Choice Recreation Demand Model of Atlantic Salmon Fishing*

Abstract: Estimating a demand system under the assumption that preferences are homogeneous may lead to biased estimates of parameters for any specific individual and significantly different expected consumer surplus estimates. This paper investigates several different parametric methods to incorporate heterogeneity in the context of a repeated discrete-choice model. The first is the classic met...

Is There a Stepping Stone Effect in Drug Use? Separating State Dependence from Unobserved Heterogeneity Within and Between Illicit Drugs

Empirically, teenagers who use alcohol or marijuana in one period are more likely to use hard drugs in the future. This pattern can be explained by a causal effect of soft drug consumption on future consumption of hard drugs (i.e., state dependence between drugs or stepping-stone effects) or by unobserved characteristics that make people more likely to use both soft and hard drugs (i.e., correl...
