On the classical treatment of the Stark effect in hydrogen atoms

چکیده
— A classical model of the hydrogen atom in a static electric field is studied, basing upon the work [ Hooker A. et al, Phys. Rev. A, 55 (1997) 4609 ]. In that work the electrons are supposed to move along Kepler orbits around the nucleus, while interacting with the external field. That classical model reproduces very well the true energy shift of the linear Stark effect. The agreement with the second order effect is poor. It is shown here that the results for the quadratic Stark effect may be considerably improved if the electrons are still allowed to move along classical trajectories, but whose initial conditions are statistically sampled from a distribution resembling the quantum mechanical one.

Investigation of Substituent Effects on the Strength of Hydrogen Bond in the Guanine: Cytosine Base Pairs: A Theoretical Study
In the present work, the substituent effect on the strength of H-bonds in the guanine – cytosine base pair was studied when the substituents are connected to the guanine base through a phenyl ring. In this study, guanine was substituted in the H8 and H9 positions by electron donating (ED) and electron withdrawing (EW) groups mediated by a phenyl ring in the gas phase. The calculations were perf...
متن کاملA classical analogue for adiabatic Stark splitting in non-hydrogenic atoms
For highly excited lowstates of atoms, a rising electric field causes a mixing between angular momenta that gives rise to Stark states. A relatively simple situation occurs if the electric field is not strong enough to mix states with adjacent principle quantum numbers. If the initial state has slightly lower (higher) energy than the degenerate manifold, then the state adiabatically connects to...
متن کاملThe Stark Effect in Hydrogen
In these notes we consider the Stark effect in hydrogen and alkali atoms as a physically interesting example of bound state perturbation theory. The Stark effect concerns the behavior of atoms in external electric fields. We choose hydrogen and alkali atoms because they are single-electron atoms (in the case of alkalis, this is a model). We particularly emphasize the role that symmetry principl...

In this study, based on Density Functional Theory (DFT), the effect of solution on the g-tensor, hyperfine coupling constant of atoms and finally the EPR spectrum of alanine free radicals induced by ionizing radiation such as electron and gamma was investigated using implicit models such as COSMO, and explicit models such as introducing hydrogen bonds to the cluster structures. The obtained res...
