چکیده

Binocular fixation is achieved by rotating the eyes, but this process also transforms the pattern of image disparities. This effect is problematic for biological visual systems, in which stereopsis is based on simple, short-range mechanisms. It is argued here that the problem should be addressed in two ways; firstly by an appropriate representation of disparity, and secondly by modelling the typical pattern of image correspondences. It is shown that the average spatial structure of the disparity field can be estimated, over a series of binocular fixations. An algorithm based on this idea is tested on natural images. Finally, it is shown how the average pattern of disparities could help to put the images into binocular correspondence.

Binocularity during reading fixations: Properties of the minimum fixation disparity

The present study was based on the physiologically reasonable assumption that the binocular system aims for a reduction of fixation disparity during fixation and that the minimum amount of fixation disparity reflects the optimal binocular status. We measured eye movements (EyeLink II) of 18 participants, while they read 60 sentences from the Potsdam-Sentence-Corpus (PSC) at a viewing distance o...

Ocular dominance predicts neither strength nor class of disparity selectivity with random-dot stimuli in primate V1.

We address two unresolved issues concerning the coding of binocular disparity in primary visual cortex. Experimental studies and theoretical models have suggested a relationship between a cell's ocular dominance, assessed with monocular stimuli, and its tuning to binocular disparity. First, the disparity energy model of disparity selectivity suggests that there should be a correlation between o...

Spatial frequency integration for binocular correspondence in macaque area

Neurons in the primary visual cortex (V1) detect binocular disparity by computing the local disparity energy of stereo images. The representation of binocular disparity in V1 contradicts the global correspondence when the image is binocularly anticorrelated. To solve the stereo correspondence problem, this rudimentary representation of stereoscopic depth needs to be further processed in the ext...

Testing quantitative models of binocular disparity selectivity in primary visual cortex.

Disparity-selective neurons in striate cortex (V1) probably implement the initial processing that supports binocular vision. Recently, much progress has been made in understanding the computations that these neurons perform on retinal inputs. The binocular energy model has been highly successful in providing a simple theory of these computations. A key feature of the energy model is that it is ...
