Additives That Prevent Or Reverse Cathode Aging In Drift Chambers With Helium-Isobutane Gas

چکیده

Noise and Malter breakdown have been studied at high rates in a test chamber having the same cell structure and gas as in the BaBar drift chamber. The chamber was first damaged by exposing it to a high source level at an elevated high voltage, until its operating current at normal voltages was only ~0.5nA/cm. Additives such as water or alcohol allowed the damaged chamber to operate at 25 nA/cm, but when the additive was removed the operating point reverted to the original low value. However with 0.2% to 0.5% oxygen or 5% carbon dioxide the chamber could operate at more than 25 nA/cm, and continued to operate at this level even after the additive was removed. This shows for the first time that running with an O2 or CO2 additive at high ionisation levels can cure a damaged chamber from breakdown problems. ——— ∗ Work supported by Department of Energy contract DE-AC03-76SF00515. 1 Presented at the Aging Phenomena In Gaseous Detectors workshop at DESY, Germany, Oct 2-5, 2001. Studies of Helium Gas Mixtures in Drift Chambers*

Some properties of gas mixtures, composed predominately of helium and lesser amounts of CO2 and isobutane, were measured in a prototype drift chamber. The studies are motivated by the desire to reduce the multiple scattering inside the drift chamber at future high-luminosity, low-energy facilities such as 4 factories, T/charm factories, and B factories. The low atomic number of helium greatly r...

BaBar drift chamber aging study

In order to obtain a reliable estimate of the lifetime of the BaBar drift chamber, a dedicated aging test chamber has been constructed. The working gas mixture is Helium/Isobutane (80/20). After accumulating up to 0.11C/cm charge dose the anode wire showed no appreciable signs of aging, but the field wires showed a small Malter effect. At 0.2C/cm the gas gain dropped B6–9% and the Malter effect...

Radiation Aging Studies of Co2 Hydrocarbon Mixtures for the Sld Drift Chamber*

The SLD drift chamber requires a ‘slow’ drifting gas and low diffusion to allow wave form digitization. CO2 provides this but requires an admixture of a quencher to provide more gain. _ A test chamber with an 8 sense wire cell, such as will appear in the final chamber, was exposed to an X-ray tube while containing a variety of binary admixtures of COz: 8% isobutane, 8% ethane, and 2% isopropano...

Gas mixture optimization for CMS muon Cathode Strip Chambers

The results of measurements of electron drift velocities and Lorentz angles in the magnetic field B = 0.5 T and 1.0 T as well as amplification properties in various fast gas mixtures are presented in this paper. The experimental data are compared with calculations. The main goal of investigations is to optimize properties of the gas mixture for the Cathode Strip Chambers.

Mobilities of positive ions in some gas mixtures used in proportional and drift chambers

2014 We have measured the mobility of positive ions in several gas mixtures frequently used in proportional and drift chambers, namely Ar-(OCH3)2CH2, Ar-(OCH3)2CH2-IsoC4H10, Ar-CH4, and Ar-CO2. In all gas mixtures considered, Blanc’s law of positive ion mobility has been verified, except for a very small methylal concentration in argon-isobutane-methylal. The law permits the calculation of ion ...
