چکیده
A newly designed mass-detecting capillary viscometer is extended to measure the viscosity of whole blood over a range of shear rates without the use of anticoagulants in a clinical setting. In the present study as proof of principle, a single measurement of liquid-mass variation with time replaces the flow rate and pressure drop measurements that are usually required for the operation of a capillary tube viscometer. Using a load cell and capillary, we measured the change of mass flowing through capillary tube with respect to the time, m(t), from which viscosity and shear rate were mathematically calculated. For water and adulterated bloods, excellent agreement was found between the results from the mass-detecting capillary viscometer and those from a commercially available rotating viscometer. Also, the mass-detecting capillary viscometer measured the viscosity of unadulterated whole blood without heparin or EDTA. This new method overcomes the drawbacks of conventional viscometers in the measurement of the whole blood viscosity. First, the mass-detecting capillary viscometer can accurately and consistently measure the unadulterated blood viscosity over a range of shear rates in less than 2 min without any anticoagulants. Second, this design provides simplicity (i.e. ease of operation, no moving parts, and disposable) and low cost. © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

With a decrease in the dimensions of microbiosensors, the stochastic variation in the number of substrate complexes with the molecular recognition elements of biosensors (enzymes, receptors, antibodies, etc.) can lead to significant fluctuations in the output signal. In this theoretical analysis, the mean current, as well as its dispersion and correlation functions, are determined. ©1998 Publis...

A methylene blue-mediated enzyme biosensor has been developed for the detection of inhibitors including mercury(II), mercury(I), methylmercury, and mercury–glutathione complex. The inhibition to horseradish peroxidase was apparently reversible and noncompetitive in the presence of HgCl2 in less than 8 s and irreversibly inactivated when incubated with different concentrations of HgCl2 for 1–8 m...
متن کاملManaging the granularity of constraint-based analyses by rule transformation
This paper proposes a transformation-based approach to design efficient constraint-based analysis at a larger granularity. In this approach, we can design a less or equally precise but more efficient version of an original analysis by rule transformation. To do this, we first define or design an index determination rule for a new sparse analysis based on some syntactic properties, so that it ca...
متن کاملThe decay and interruption of interactions between search mechanisms
The attentional mechanisms in the brain responsible for fast pop-out search and slower difficult search have been shown to interact. Even if pop-out search is interrupted, by the addition of extra distractors to an initially simple search display, the partial computations calculated by the mechanisms responsible for pop-out can facilitate subsequent difficult search ("search assistance"; Psycho...
