Direct observations of nonmigrating diurnal tides in the equatorial thermosphere

چکیده
[1] We present direct observations of nonmigrating diurnal tides in the 90–270 km range inferred from the Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS) wind imaging interferometer (WINDII). A prominent zonal wavenumber 4 appears in daytime zonal winds, extending to 180 km. We interpret this signature as an eastward‐propagating diurnal wavenumber 3 (DE3) viewed from the satellite perspective. This evidence of the extended upward propagation of DE3 demonstrates that it acts as a direct coupling agent between the troposphere and the thermosphere (and F‐region), in addition to its role in the E‐region dynamo. The influence of nonmigrating tides on the longitudinal variation of the equatorial electrojet
[1] The climatological model of the equatorial electrojet, EEJM-1, derived from Ørsted, CHAMP and SAC-C satellite measurements provides the opportunity to investigate the longitudinal variation of the current strength in detail. Special emphasis is put in this study on the effect of nonmigrating tides. We have found that the influence of the diurnal eastward-propagating mode with wavenumber-3, ...
متن کاملNonmigrating semidiurnal tide over the Arctic determined from TIMED Doppler Interferometer wind observations
[1] The TIMED Doppler Interferometer (TIDI) on the NASA Thermosphere Ionosphere Mesosphere Energetics and Dynamics (TIMED) satellite has been measuring horizontal winds in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere (MLT) since 2002. Because of the high inclination of the TIMED orbit, TIDI measures the horizontal winds from pole to pole every orbit. This paper presents the first assessment of the spa...
متن کاملClimatology of the diurnal tides from eCMAM30 (1979 to 2010) and its comparison with SABER
The extended Canadian Middle Atmosphere Model (eCMAM) was recently run in a nudged mode using reanalysis data from the ground to 1 hPa for the period of January 1979 to June 2010 (hence the name eCMAM30). In this paper, eCMAM30 temperature is used to examine the background mean temperature, the spectrum of the diurnal tides, and the climatology of the migrating diurnal tide Dw1 and three nonmig...
متن کاملGlobal distributions of diurnal and semidiurnal tides: observations from HRDI-UARS of the MLT region and comparisons with GSWM-02 (migrating, nonmigrating components)
HRDI (High Resolution Doppler InterferometerUARS) winds data have been analyzed in 4-latitude by 10-longitude cells at 96 km to obtain the global distribution of the solar-tidal amplitudes and phases. The solstices June–July (1993), December–January (1993–1994), and one equinox (September–October, 1994) are analyzed. In an earlier paper (Manson et al., 2002b) the emphasis was solely upon the lo...
متن کاملNon-migrating tides connections with topography and surface properties
Atmospheric densities derived from measured acceleration of several Mars orbiters reveal large amplitude Sun-synchronous longitudinal density variations at altitudes of about 100-160km (see Figure 1). These variations are associated with vertically-propagating nonmigrating solar thermal tides that are excited near Mars’ surface and propagate into the thermosphere. Excitation of these waves is a...
