Development of Advanced Structural Analysis Methodologies for Predicting Widespread Fatigue Damage in Aircraft Structures

چکیده
NASA is developing a "tool box" that includes a number of advanced structural analysis computer codes which, taken together, represent the comprehensive fracture mechanics capability required to predict the onset of widespread fatigue damage. These structural analysis tools have complementary and specialized capabilities ranging from a finite-element-based stress-analysis code for twoand three-dimensional built-up structures with cracks to a fatigue and fracture analysis code that uses stressintensity factors and material-property data found in "look-up" tables or from equations. NASA is conducting critical experiments necessary to verify the predictive capabilities of the codes, and these tests represent a first step in the technology-validation and industry-acceptance processes. NASA has established cooperative programs with aircraft manufacturers to facilitate the comprehensive transfer of this technology by making these advanced structural analysis codes available to industry.

Methodology for Predicting the Onset of Widespread Fatigue Damage in Lap-Splice Joints
NASA has conducted an Airframe Structural Integrity Program to develop the methodology to predict the onset of widespread fatigue damage in lap-splice joints of fuselage structures. Several stress analysis codes have been developed or enhanced to analyze the lap-splice-joint configuration. Fatigue lives in lap-splicejoint specimens and fatigue-crack growth in a structural fatigue test article a...

With advanced composites increasing replacing traditional metallic materials, the material inhomogeneity and inherent anisotropy of such materials lead to not only new attributes for aerospace structures, but also introduce new technology to damage tolerant design and analysis. The deleterious effects of changes in material properties and initiation and growth of structural damage must be addre...
متن کاملAdvances in Fatigue and Fracture Mechanics Analyses for Aircraft Structures
This paper reviews some of the advances that have been made in stress analyses of cracked aircraft components, in the understanding of the fatigue and fatigue-crack growth process, and in the prediction of residual strength of complex aircraft structures with widespread fatigue damage. Finite-element analyses of cracked structures are now used to determine accurate stress-intensity factors for ...
متن کاملPredictions of Widespread Fatigue Damage Thresholds in Aging Aircraft
Commercial transport aircraft are required to operate under the concept of damage tolerance. Because of the structural redundancy and the crack arrest capability, the current fleet of commercial aircraft was initially designed to have sufficient residual strength to sustain discrete source damage. However, fatigue damage during the life of an aircraft can significantly reduce the residual stren...

The assessment of seismic performance of existing structures is becoming an important problem in earthquake engineering. Some important ructures are considerably old and, therefore, their strengths and ductilities are less than strength and ductility demands because of changes in codes and design methodologies. Such structures must be strengthened to resist future earthquakes. First, a structur...
