چکیده

We study the quantitative properties of a dynamic general equilibrium model in which agents face both idiosyncratic and aggregate income risk, state-dependent borrowing constraints that bind in some but not all periods and markets are incomplete. Optimal individual consumption-savings plans and equilibrium asset prices are computed under various assumptions about income uncertainty. Then we investigate whether our general equilibrium model with incomplete markets replicates two empirical observations: the high correlation between individual consumption and individual income, and the equity premium puzzle. We nd that, when the driving processes are calibrated according to the data from wage income in di erent sectors of the US economy, the results move in the direction of explaining these observations, but the model falls short of explaining the observed correlations quantitatively. If the incomes of agents are assumed independent of each other, the observations can be explained quantitatively.

Risk Aversion and Optimal Portfolio Policies in Partial and General Equilibrium

In this article, we show how to analyze analytically the equilibrium policies and prices in an economy with a stochastic investment opportunity set and incomplete financial markets, when agents have power utility over both intermediate consumption and terminal wealth, and face portfolio constraints. The exact local comparative statics and approximate but analytical expression for the portfolio ...

Equilibrium and arbitrage in incomplete asset markets with fixed prices

At arbitrary prices of commodities and assets, fix-price equilibria exist under weak assumptions: endowments need not satisfy an interiority condition, utility functions need only satisfy a very weak monotonicity requirement, and the asset return matrix allows for redundant assets. Prices of assets may permit arbitrage. At equilibrium, though restricted through endogenously determined trading c...

Income and Wealth Heterogeneity, Portfolio Choice, and Equilibrium Asset Returns

We derive asset-pricing and portfolio-choice implications of a dynamic incomplete-markets model in which consumers are heterogeneous in several respects: labor income, asset wealth, and preferences. In contrast to earlier papers, we insist on at least roughly matching the model’s implications for heterogeneity—notably, the equilibrium distributions of income and wealth—with those in U.S. data. ...

Dynamic Equilibrium with Heterogeneous Agents and Risk Constraints∗

We examine the impact of risk-based portfolio constraints on asset prices in an exchange economy. We show that constrained agents scale down their portfolio and behave locally like power utility investors with risk aversion that depends on current market conditions. In contrast to previous results in the literature, we show that the imposition of constraints dampens fundamental shocks, challeng...

Belief Heterogeneity, Collateral Constraint, and Asset Prices with a Quantitative Assessment∗

The recent economic crisis highlights the role of financial markets in allowing economic agents, including prominent banks, to speculate on the future returns of different financial assets, such as mortgage-backed securities. This paper introduces a dynamic general equilibriummodel with aggregate shocks, endogeneously incomplete markets and heterogeneous agents to investigate this role of finan...
