Optical bistability for two-level atoms in a standing-wave cavity: errata.

چکیده
In our recent Letter1 we labeled the ordinate in Fig. 2 incorrectly. The values of 1.0 and 2.0 on the scale labeled "Switching Intensity, Y (X1O-4)" should be replaced by 0.558 and 1.12, respectively. The scale then corresponds to that obtained from the theory quoted in the text of the Letter. Figure 2 without this change of scale presents the experimentally determined switching intensities Y from Eq. (2), with the theoretical curve having been multiplied by a factor of 1.8.

Optical bistability for two-level atoms in a standing-wave cavity.
Observations of optical bistability are reported for a system composed of multiple atomic beams passing through a high-finesse optical cavity. Both the transmitted power and the intracavity fluorescent intensity have been recorded as functions of incident laser power for zero cavity and atomic detunings. A quantitative study has been made of the evolution of the steady-state switching intensiti...
متن کاملBistability and instability of three-level atoms inside an optical cavity
Optical bistability and dynamic instability are experimentally observed and studied in a system consisting of three-level L-type rubidium atoms in an optical ring cavity. The bistable behavior and self-pulsing frequency are experimentally manipulated by changing the controlling and cavity field parameters ~power and frequency!. These nonlinear effects are influenced by the enhanced Kerr nonline...
متن کاملDiffraction of ultra-cold fermions by quantized light fields: Standing versus traveling waves
We study the diffraction of quantum degenerate fermionic atoms off of quantized light fields in an optical cavity. We compare the case of a linear cavity with standing wave modes to that of a ring cavity with two counter-propagating traveling wave modes. It is found that the dynamics of the atoms strongly depends on the quantization procedure for the cavity field. For standing waves, no correla...
متن کاملControlling optical bistability in a three-level atomic system
We have experimentally studied the optical bistable behavior in an optical ring cavity filled with a collection of three-level L-type rubidium atoms, interacting with two collinearly propagating laser beams. The bistability so observed is very sensitive to the induced atomic coherence in this electromagnetically induced transparency system or consequently to the altered nonlinearity in the syst...
متن کاملAnomalous optical bistability and robust entanglement of mechanical oscillators
Quantum coherence is one of the most intriguing applications of quantum mechanics, and has led to interesting phenomena and uncommon results. Here we show that in a stark contrast to the usual red-detuned condition to observe bistability in single-mode optomechanics, the optical intensities exhibit bistability for all values of cavity-laser detuning due to intermode coupling induced by the two-...
