چکیده

In order to compute cloud coverage statistics over Asian region, an operational scheme for masking cloud-contaminated pixels in Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) daytime data was developed, evaluated and presented. Dynamic threshold was used with channel 1, 2 and 3 to automatically create a cloud mask for a single image. Then the 10-day cloud coverage imagery was generated over the whole Asian region along with cloud-free composite imagery. Finally the monthly based statistics were computed based on the derived cloud coverage imagery in terms of land cover and country. As a result, it was found that 20-day is required to acquire the cloud free data over the entire Asian region using NOAA AVHRR. The 10-day cloud coverage and cloud-free composite imagery derived in this research is available via the web-site http://webpanda.iis.utokyo.ac.jp/CloudCover/.

AVHRR GAC SST Reanalysis Version 1 (RAN1)

In response to its users’ needs, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) initiated reanalysis (RAN) of the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) Global Area Coverage (GAC; 4 km) sea surface temperature (SST) data employing its Advanced Clear Sky Processor for Oceans (ACSPO) retrieval system. Initially, AVHRR/3 data from five NOAA and two Metop satellites from 2002 ...

Seasonal variation of cloud particle size as derived from AVHRR remote sensing

[1] We have analyzed long-term NOAA/AVHRR (Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer) global data from 1985 to 1994 to investigate the variation of the cloud particle size for low-lying water clouds. Here we focus on seasonal change of the cloud particle size instead of studying the variability the absolute values, since there are several critical factors which affect the long time-series thus o...

The following is an author's personal copy of "Subpixel Characterization of HIRS Spectral Radiances Using Cloud Properties from AVHRR", from the Journal of Atmospheric and Oceanic

This paper describes a cloud type radiance record derived from NOAA polar-orbiting weather satellites using cloud properties retrieved from the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) and spectral brightness temperatures (Tb) observed by the High Resolution Infrared Radiation Sounder (HIRS). The authors seek to produce a seamless, global-scale, long-term record of cloud type andTb stat...

In-flight interband calibration on AVHRR data by a cloud-viewing technique

A significant degradation in the responsivity of the AVHRR radiometers aboard the NOAA satellite series, affects the index vegetation (NDVI), which is an important source of information for monitoring vegetation conditions on regional and global scales. Many studies have been carried out which use the viewing Earth calibration approach in order to provide accurate calibration correction coeffic...

Relative Merits of the 1.6 and 3.75 μm channels of the AVHRR/3 for cloud detection

A study was performed to investigate the potential impacts in the cloud masking capability of the AVHRR on NOAA polar orbiting satellites due to the addition of the of 1.6 μm channel (ch3a) and the removal of the 3.75 μm channel (ch3b) during daylight operation. Both channels are measured by the AVHRR but only one of them are available in the data-stream. Because the AVHRR presents the longest ...
