Irreversibility of the renormalization group flow in non-unitary quantum field theory

چکیده

We show irreversibility of the renormalization group flow in non-unitary but PT -invariant quantum field theory in two space-time dimensions. In addition to unbroken PT -symmetry and a positive energy spectrum, we assume standard properties of quantum field theory including a local energy-momentum tensor and relativistic invariance. This generalizes Zamolodchikov’s c-theorem to PT -symmetric Hamiltonians. Our proof follows closely Zamolodchikov’s arguments. We show that a function ceff(s) of the renormalization group parameter s exists which is non-negative and monotonically decreasing along renormalization group flows. Its value at a critical point is the ‘effective central charge’ entering the specific free energy. At least in rational models, this equals ceff = c − 24∆, where c is the central charge and Δ is the lowest primary field dimension in the conformal field theory which describes the critical point.

Sum Rules for Trace Anomalies and Irreversibility of the Renormalization-group Flow

The purpose of my talk is to review exact results for the trace anomalies c and a in the critical limits of supersymmetric theories, which provide non-perturbative evidence that the renormalization-group (RG) flow is irreversible, and then derive universal sum rules for c, a and a in even dimensions, formulate a theory of the irreversibility of the RG flow, recapitulate the arguments and the ev...

Wilsonian vs . 1 PI renormalization group flow irreversibility

We present a line of reasoning based on the analysis of scale variations of the Wilsonian partition function and the trace of the stress tensor in a curved manifold which results in a statement of irreversibility of Wilsonian renormalization group flow for unitary theories. We also analyze subtleties related to subtractions in the case of the 1PI effective action flow. e-mail: [email protected]...

Reversing Renormalization-Group Flows with AdS/CFT

For scalar fields in AdS with masses slightly above the Breitenlohner-Freedman bound, appropriate non-local boundary conditions can define a unitary theory. Such boundary conditions correspond to non-local deformations of the dual CFT, and generate a non-local renormalization-group flow. Nevertheless, a bulk analysis suggests that certain such flows lead to local CFTs in the infrared. Since the...

Dftt 17/98 a Proof of the Irreversibility of Renormalization Group Flows in Four Dimensions

We present a proof of the irreversibility of renormalization group flows, i.e. the c–theorem for unitary, renormalizable theories in four (or generally even) dimensions. Using Ward identities for scale transformations and spectral representation arguments, we show that the c–function based on the trace of the energy-momentum tensor (originally suggested by Cardy) decreases monotonically along r...
