چکیده

Orthopedic implants fail due to various reasons such as extensive bacterial colonization, poor osseointegration, extensive inflammation and osteolysis due to wear debris. In order to reduce orthopedic implant failures, the main objective of this study was to create a biomimetic bone tissue engineering material based on the self assembling properties of rosette nanotubes (RNTs), the osteoconductive properties of nanophase hydroxyapatite (HA), the bacterial inhibition properties of the MAM7 peptide, the quorum sensing inhibitor RNAIII peptide, and the anticancer properties of the PCK3145 peptide as well as curcumin.

Mechanical properties of dispersed ceramic nanoparticles in polymer composites for orthopedic applications

Ceramic/polymer composites have been considered as third-generation orthopedic biomaterials due to their ability to closely match properties (such as surface, chemistry, biological, and mechanical) of natural bone. It has already been shown that the addition of nanophase compared with conventional (or micron-scale) ceramics to polymers enhances bone cell functions. However, in order to fully ta...

Increased osteoblast adhesion on nanophase metals: Ti, Ti6Al4V, and CoCrMo.

Previous studies have demonstrated increased functions of osteoblasts (bone-forming cells) on nanophase compared to conventional ceramics (specifically, alumina, titania, and hydroxyapatite), polymers (such as poly lactic-glycolic acid and polyurethane), carbon nanofibers/nanotubes, and composites thereof. Nanophase materials are unique materials that simulate dimensions of constituent componen...

Loading Drug on Nanostructured Ti6Al4V-HA for Implant Applications

Arrayed Ti6Al4V nanotubes (TNT) coated with hydroxyapatite (HA) were synthesized via electrochemical anodization method. Paracetamol was loaded onto TNT-HA electrode. Effects of anodization, nanotube formation and hydroxyapatite deposition on sorption and release of the drug were investigated. Saturation time of paracetamol on the anodized samples was 30% shorter than the hydroxyapatite-coated ...

Biocompatibility of Hydroxyapatite-Alumina and Hydroxyapatite-Zirconia Composites including Commercial Inert Glass (CIG) as a Ternary Component

Hydroxyapatite (HA), chemical formula Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2, is a very popular bioceramic for orthopedic and dental applications. Although HA has excellent biocompatibility, its inferior mechanical properties make it unsuitable for load-bearing implant applications. Therefore,HA should be strengthened by a secondary phase to produce a composite that possesses robust mechanical properties. The aim of ...

Biomimetic helical rosette nanotubes and nanocrystalline hydroxyapatite coatings on titanium for improving orthopedic implants

Natural bone consists of hard nanostructured hydroxyapatite (HA) in a nanostructured protein-based soft hydrogel template (ie, mostly collagen). For this reason, nanostructured HA has been an intriguing coating material on traditionally used titanium for improving orthopedic applications. In addition, helical rosette nanotubes (HRNs), newly developed materials which form through the self-assemb...
