Australia-New Zealand Currency Union: A Structural Approach
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper compares an Australia-New Zealand currency union to a purely floating exchange rate regime in the context of a structural, two-country open economy model. Micro-foundations support policy assessment by facilitating direct calculation of household welfare. Analysis focuses on changing business cycle volatilities; the role of risk is not considered. At benchmark calibration currency union is welfare reducing for both Australia and New Zealand. Sensitivity analyses reveal these results to be qualitatively robust over alternative degrees of shock correlation and shock transmission. JEL codes: F22, F33, F41, F42

Three Perspectives on an Australasian Monetary Union
Whether Australia and New Zealand should have a single currency is periodically debated in New Zealand. There was a resounding ‘No’ when the question was discussed in the early 1990s, but there was less agreement when the debate resurfaced two or three years ago.2 Indeed, the idea now has considerable support within New Zealand amongst academics, businessmen, and the general public.3 Even the P...
متن کاملCo-Movement Towards a Currency or Monetary Union? An Empirical Study for New Zealand by
This paper analyses whether New Zealand would be ready to form a currency or monetary union with either Australia, the 11 EU countries that are members of the EMU, Japan, or the US, if the criteria that have been put forward for the EMU are applied. The analysis is an empirical study with data from the mid 1980s to 1998, using cointegration techniques to search for co-movement and convergence i...

Ritschl and Wolf (2003) rely on an unusual variable for currency unions in their empirical analysis. In particular, their data set indicates that all the country-pairs listed below were considered to be in currency unions in the interwar period. Thus, according to Ritschl and Wolf, Austria and Bulgaria were in a currency union. Indeed, Austria was also in currency union with Czechoslovakia, Den...
متن کاملDo Central Banks Respond to Exchange Rate Movements? Some New Evidence from Structural Estimation
This paper investigates whether and how exchange rate movements were taken into account in formulating monetary policy in Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the United Kingdom. We develop and estimate a structural general equilibrium two-sector model with sticky prices and wages, partial indexation on lagged inflation, a combination of both producer currency pricing and local currency pricing f...
متن کاملPolicy by Contract Social pacts in Australia and New Zealand
Governments often make public deals with interest groups, yet the conditions under which these bargains emerge are not well understood. This paper explores these policy contracts in the context of “social pacts”, where governments sign explicit policy agreements with peak level union federations for electoral gain. I develop a theory of pacts and then apply it to an empirical puzzle emerging fr...
