چکیده

The effect of gamma irradiation on lignin biosynthesis during wound healing in potato tubers was studied by [U-C] phenylalanine incorporation into lignin and monitoring the activities of key enzymes involved in the lignification process. There was a 40% reduction in lignin biosynthesis during wound healing in response to gamma irradiation. The level of the first enzyme involved in lignin biosynthesis, phenylalanine ammonia lyase (PAL), was five-fold higher in irradiated potatoes than in control tubers during wound healing. However the level of another key enzyme, cinnamyl alcohol dehydrogenase (CAD) was found to be 30% less in irradiated potatoes. There was no significant change in peroxidase activity and its isozyme pattern during wound healing. Differential regulation of different enzymes of lignin biosynthesis in response to gamma irradiation may be responsible for the decreased lignin biosynthesis. © 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. Biochemical characterization of the suberization-associated anionic peroxidase of potato.

The anionic peroxidase associated with the suberization response in potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) tubers during wound healing has been purified and partially characterized at the biochemical level. It is a 45-kD, class III (plant secretory) peroxidase that is localized to suberizing tissues and shows a preference for feruloyl (o-methoxyphenol)-substituted substrates (order of substrate preferen...

Potato Sprout Inhibition and Tuber Quality after Post Harvest Treatment with Gamma Irradiation on Different Dates

Storage of potatoes is very important because fresh potatoes are available only for a few months in a year. Thus, any treatment such as irradiation that controls sprout growth and extends shelf life of potatoes could be beneficial. In this study, potato sprout inhibition and tuber quality after treatment with various levels of Gamma Irradiation (0, 50, 100 and 150 Gy) on different dates (10, 30...

The creation of artificial metabolic sinks in plants by genetic engineering of key branch points may have serious consequences for the metabolic pathways being modified. The introduction into potato of a gene encoding tryptophan decarboxylase (TDC) isolated from Catharanthus roseus drastically altered the balance of key substrate and product pools involved in the shikimate and phenylpropanoid p...

Regulatory involvement of abscisic acid in potato tuber wound-healing.

Rapid wound-healing is crucial in protecting potato tubers from infection and dehydration. Wound-induced suberization and the accumulation of hydrophobic barriers to reduce water vapour conductance/loss are principal protective wound-healing processes. However, little is known about the cognate mechanisms that effect or regulate these processes. The objective of this research was to determine t...
