After receiving a doctorate in Biochemistry at the University of Köln, Germany, in 1995, Dr. Boison continued his scientific career at the Institute of Pharmacology at the University of Zürich and the Federal Institute of Technology in Zürich, Switzerland, where he began to focus on therapeutic epilepsy research and received a Habilitation in Cellular Pharmacology. In 2005 he moved to the Legacy Research Institute in Portland, Oregon, where he is currently the Robert Stone Dow Chair of Neurology and Director of Neurobiology Research (Robert Stone Dow Neurobiology Laboratories) and the Director of Basic and Translational Research of the Legacy Research Institute. He is also Adjunct Full Professor at Oregon Health and Science University (Department of Neurology) and Adjunct Full Professor at Washington State University (Department of Veterinary Medicine).
