چکیده

The problem of detecting suitable parameters for metaheuristic optimization algorithms is well known long since. As these nondeterministic methods, e.g. evolution strategies (ES) [1], are highly adaptible to a specific application, detecting good parameter settings is vital for their success. Performance differences of orders of magnitude (in time and/or quality) are often achieved by means of automated tuning methods. In the last years, several of these have been suggested, and many incorporate surrogate models for the algorithm parameter space. Although tuning methods are reliable tools to build specific optimization algorithms by modifying the parameters of canonic ones, their use is somewhat restricted to relatively cheap objective functions (in terms of computational cost). As a huge number of algorithm runs is necessary, they are simply not applicable when the evaluation time of the objective function increases beyond a certain level. If the objective function is too expensive for applying tuning methods directly, one can resort to simpler approaches: 1) Try to find a suitable parameter setting for a canonical metaheuristic by means of a simple randomized or space-filling design, or 2) give up on the parameter optimization approach and optimize the problem directly with a heuristic or metaheuristic that incorporates surrogate models itself. The latter methodology is employed e.g. by EGO [2], but also by surrogate model enhanced metaheuristics like the model-assisted evolution strategy (MAES) [3]. Whereas tuning methods utilize many runs of standard algorithms which are

Optimal Shaping of Non-Conventional Permanent Magnet Geometries for Synchronous Motors via Surrogate Modeling and Multi-Objective Optimization Approach

A methodology is proposed for optimal shaping of permanent magnets with non-conventional and complex geometries, used in synchronous motors. The algorithm includes artificial neural network-based surrogate model and multi-objective search based optimization method that will lead to Pareto front solutions. An interior permanent magnet topology with crescent-shaped magnets is also introduced as t...

Expensive Optimisation: A Metaheuristics Perspective

Stochastic, iterative search methods such as Evolutionary Algorithms (EAs) are proven to be efficient optimizers. However, they require evaluation of the candidate solutions which may be prohibitively expensive in many real world optimization problems. Use of approximate models or surrogates is being explored as a way to reduce the number of such evaluations. In this paper we investigated three...

Multi-fidelity modeling and optimization of biogas plants

An essential task for operation and planning of biogas plants is the optimization of substrate feed mixtures. Optimizing the monetary gain requires the determination of the exact amounts of maize, manure, grass silage, and other substrates. For this purpose, accurate simulation models are mandatory, because the underlying biochemical processes are very slow. The simulation models may be time-co...

Parametric Optimization of Reconfigurable Designs Using Machine Learning

This paper presents a novel technique that uses metaheuristics and machine learning to automate the optimization of design parameters for reconfigurable designs. Traditionally, such an optimization involves manual application analysis as well as model and parameter space exploration tool creation. We develop a Machine Learning Optimizer (MLO) to automate this process. From a number of benchmark...

The relevance of tuning the parameters of metaheuristics . A case study : The vehicle routing problem with stochastic demand

Metaheuristics are a class of promising algorithms for combinatorial optimization. A basic implementation of a metaheuristic typically requires rather little development effort. With a significantly larger investment in the design, implementation, and fine-tuning, metaheuristics can often produce state-of-the-art results. We say that, according to the specific context of applications, either a ...
