Casimir forces in Bose-Einstein condensates: finite size effects in three-dimensional rectangular cavities

چکیده
The Casimir force due to thermal fluctuations (or pseudo-Casimir force) was recently calculated for the perfect Bose gas in the slab geometry for various boundary conditions. The Casimir pressure due to quantum fluctuations in a weakly-interacting dilute Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) confined to a parallel plate geometry was also recently calculated for Dirichlet boundary conditions. In this paper we calculate the Casimir energy and pressure due to quantum fluctuations in a zero-temperature homogeneous weakly-interacting dilute BEC confined to a parallel plate geometry with periodic boundary conditions and include higher-order corrections which we refer to as Bogoliubov corrections. The leading order term is identified as the Casimir energy of a massless scalar field moving with wave velocity equal to the speed of sound in the BEC. We then obtain the leading order Casimir pressure in a general three-dimensional rectangular cavity of arbitrary lengths and obtain the finite-size correction to the parallel plate scenario. ∗Email: [email protected]

Finite Number and Finite Size Effects in Relativistic Bose-Einstein Condensation
Bose-Einstein condensation of a relativistic ideal Bose gas in a rectangular cavity is studied. Finite size corrections to the critical temperature are obtained by the heat kernel method. Using zetafunction regularization of one-loop effective potential, lower dimensional critical temperatures are calculated. In the presence of strong anisotropy, the condensation is shown to occur in multisteps...

The Casimir-Polder and van der Waals interactions between an atom and a flat cavity wall are investigated under the influence of real conditions including the dynamic polarizability of the atom, actual conductivity of the wall material and nonzero temperature of the wall. The cases of different atoms near metal and dielectric walls are considered. It is shown that to obtain accurate results for...
متن کاملA Proposed Casimir-Like Effect Between Contaminants in Ideal Bose-Einstein Condensates
It is hypothesized that, within Bose-Einstein condensates, contaminants will form a potential that effects the energy state of a condensate. While assuming a system governed by the Gross-Pitaevskii equation, contaminants are modelled as boundary conditions for the wave function of the condensate. It is then found that the energy of the system depends directly upon the distance between contamina...

We present a novel type of three-dimensional dark focus optical trapping potential for ultracold atoms and Bose-Einstein condensates. This ‘optical bottle’ is created with blue-detuned laser light exploiting the phenomenon of conical refraction occurring in biaxial crystals. We present experiments on confining a Rb Bose-Einstein condensate in this potential and derive the trapping frequencies a...
