چکیده

We address the problem of merging multiple noisy maps in the rescue environment. The problem is tackled by performing a stochastic search in the space of possible map transformations. The proposed technique has its roots in a motion planning algorithm we recent developed, and turns out to be a generalization of other search techniques like hill-climbing or simulated annealing. We provide the proofs of its probabilistic convergence and we provide numerical examples of its performance while merging partial maps build by our rescue robots.

Map-merging in Multi-robot Simultaneous Localization and Mapping Process Using Two Heterogeneous Ground Robots

In this article, a fast and reliable map-merging algorithm is proposed to produce a global two dimensional map of an indoor environment in a multi-robot simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) process. In SLAM process, to find its way in this environment, a robot should be able to determine its position relative to a map formed from its observations. To solve this complex problem, simultan...

On map merging

We illustrate our experience in developing and implementing algorithms for map merging, i.e., the problem of fusing two or more partial maps without common reference frames into one large global map. The partial maps may for example be acquired by multiple robots, or during several runs of a single robot from varying starting positions. Our work deals with low quality maps based on probabilisti...

Robust Mapping and Localization in Indoor Environments Using Sonar Data

In this paper we describe a new technique for the creation of featurebased stochastic maps using standard Polaroid sonar sensors. The fundamental contributions of our proposal are: (1) a perceptual grouping process that permits the robust identification and localization of environmental features, such as straight segments and corners, from the sparse and noisy sonar data; (2) a map joining tech...

SPECO: Stochastic Perturbation based Clock tree Optimization considering temperature uncertainty

Modern computing system applications or workloads can bring significant non-uniform temperature gradient on-chip, and hence can cause significant temperature uncertainty during clock-tree synthesis. Existing designs of clock-trees have to assume a given time-invariant worst-case temperature map but cannot deal with a set of temperature maps under a set of workloads. For robust clock-tree synthe...

Predicting evolutionary rescue via evolving plasticity in stochastic environments.

Phenotypic plasticity and its evolution may help evolutionary rescue in a novel and stressful environment, especially if environmental novelty reveals cryptic genetic variation that enables the evolution of increased plasticity. However, the environmental stochasticity ubiquitous in natural systems may alter these predictions, because high plasticity may amplify phenotype-environment mismatches...
