چکیده

An 86-year-old female patient from northeast Mexico presented with diffuse lepromatous leprosy (DLL). Sequence analysis of four genes (rrs, rpoB, sigA, and hsp65) from the skin biopsy specimen identified "Mycobacterium lepromatosis." This is the first independent confirmation of a case of DLL due to M. lepromatosis.

Diffuse Lepromatous Leprosy Due to Mycobacterium lepromatosis in Quintana Roo, Mexico.

A 43-year-old woman of Mayan origin from Quintana Roo, Mexico, was diagnosed with diffuse lepromatous leprosy. The etiologic bacillus was determined to be Mycobacterium lepromatosis instead of Mycobacterium leprae. This case likely represents the first report of this leprosy form and its agent in the southeastern tip of Mexico.

What is the evidence that the putative Mycobacterium lepromatosis species causes diffuse lepromatous leprosy?

Han et al. have made a retrospective isolation of DNA from two patients with fatal Lucio's phenomenon. This DNA does have some molecular differences to M. leprae and may constitute a variant of M. leprae. However the experiments and data needed to confirm that this is a new leprosy-causing species have not yet been done. We have outlined the work that does need to be done. For the moment the as...

A new Mycobacterium species causing diffuse lepromatous leprosy.

Mycobacterium leprae causes leprosy. M leprae strains collected worldwide have been genetically clonal, which poorly explains the varying severity and clinical features of the disease. We discovered a new Mycobacterium species from 2 patients who died of diffuse lepromatous leprosy (DLL). The Mycobacterium was purified from heavily infected, freshly frozen autopsy liver tissue followed by DNA e...

Insight into the evolution and origin of leprosy bacilli from the genome sequence of Mycobacterium lepromatosis.

Mycobacterium lepromatosis is an uncultured human pathogen associated with diffuse lepromatous leprosy and a reactional state known as Lucio's phenomenon. By using deep sequencing with and without DNA enrichment, we obtained the near-complete genome sequence of M. lepromatosis present in a skin biopsy from a Mexican patient, and compared it with that of Mycobacterium leprae, which has undergone...

Mycobacterium lepromatosis Lepromatous Leprosy in US Citizen Who Traveled to Disease-Endemic Areas

We report Mycobacterium lepromatosis infection in a US-born person with an extensive international travel history. Clinical symptoms, histopathology, and management are similar to those of infections caused by M. leprae. Clinicians should consider this pathogen in the diagnosis of patients with symptoms of leprosy who have traveled to endemic areas.
