چکیده

Potassium channel function is fundamental to many physiological processes in plants. In this issue of Cell, identify a protein complex in Arabidopsis consisting of a potassium channel, a protein kinase, and a calcium sensor. This study reveals that plants cope with limited soil potassium by coupling potassium channel activation to a cellular calcium signaling network.

A protein phosphorylation/dephosphorylation network regulates a plant potassium channel.

Potassium (K(+)) is an essential nutrient for plant growth and development. Plants often adapt to low K(+) conditions by increasing their K(+) uptake capability. Recent studies have led to the identification of a calcium signaling pathway that enables plants to act in this capacity. Calcium is linked to two calcineurin B-like calcium sensors (CBLs) and a target kinase (CBL-interacting protein k...

A Ca(2)+ signaling pathway regulates a K(+) channel for low-K response in Arabidopsis.

Nutrient sensing is critical for plant adaptation to the environment. Because of extensive farming and erosion, low content of mineral nutrients such as potassium (K(+)) in soils becomes a limiting factor for plant growth. In response to low-K conditions, plants enhance their capability of K(+) uptake through an unknown signaling mechanism. Here we report the identification of a Ca(2+)-dependen...

Annexins: components of the calcium and reactive oxygen signaling network.

Despite the importance of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in plant immunity, stress signaling, and development (Mori and Schroeder, 2004; Gadjev et al., 2006), the molecular identities of Ca-permeable channels responding to ROS have not been established. Here, we propose annexins as candidate channel proteins. Elevation of cytoplasmic free calcium ([Ca2+]cyt) as a regulatory step in plant immunit...

Stress Signaling II: Calcium Sensing and Signaling

Calcium is an essential second messenger in plant signaling networks. Many environmental and developmental stimuli induce an increase in cytosolic calcium to trigger different physiological responses. The specificity of Ca2+ signaling is achieved by a combination of distinct calcium signatures that are generated by specific calcium channels, pumps and transporters, and diverse calcium sensors t...
