چکیده

The problem of body fitting meshes that are both adaptive and geometrically accurate is important in a variety of biomedical applications in a multitude of clinical settings, including electrocardiology, neurology, and orthopedics. Adaptivity is necessary because of the combination of large-scale and smallscale structures (e.g. relatively small blood vessels spanning a human head). Geometric accuracy is important for several reasons. In some cases, such as computational fluid dynamics, the fine-scale structure of the fluid domain is important for qualitative and quantitative accuracy of the solutions. More generally, finite element approximations of elliptic problems with rough coefficients require increased spatial resolution normal to material boundaries [3]. The problem of constructing meshes from biomedical images is particularly difficult because of the complexity and irregularity of the structures, and thus tuning or correcting meshes by hand is quite difficult and time consuming. Many researchers and, indeed, commercial products simply subdivide the underlying hexahedral image grid and assign material properties to tetrahedra based on standard decomposition of each hexahedron into tetrahedra. This paper presents a small case study of the results of a recently developed method for multimaterial, tetrahedral meshing of biomedical volumes [6]. The method uses an iterative relaxation of surface point point positions that are constrained to subsets of the volume that correspond to boundaries between different materials. In this paper we briefly review the method and present results on a set of MRI head images for use in bioelectric field simulation and source localization.

Bioelectric Field Simulation and Visualization

The reconstruction of the bioelectric field in the human brain from non-invasive measurements like electroencephalographic recordings (EEG) has the potential to become a powerful tool in neurology. From a mathematical point of view, the reconstruction can be considered as an inverse problem, which can be solved by repeated numerical simulations of the potential distribution for assumed dipolar ...

Finite Element Meshing Of Human Bones From MRI/CT Raw Data

Finite element modeling of human bones is quite useful in biomechanical simulations. In the present work a technique is developed to make FE model of bones from MRI/CT scan data. Developed technique is a modification over conventionally used techniques. In conventional technique solid modeling processes intermediate solid / surface generation is essential before getting finite element model fro...

A Voronoi-Based Hybrid Meshing Method

In this research note we introduce a method to build volumetric hybrid meshes suitable for finite element computations. Our work is motivated by meshing problems encountered in geological modeling. Geological models are multimaterial models that can have a high number of interfaces, these interfaces can come close to each other in certain zones and intersect at low-angles defining thin features...

Developing a Finite Element Head Model for Impact Simulation in Abaqus

A computational model of the human head has been developed by Simpleware and the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) to simulate head impact. The head model was generated using high-resolution scan data, segmentation and image-based meshing techniques, and has been used in Abaqus for a range of simulations. The NRL/Simpleware head model addresses several key limitations of existing techniques ...

Non-uniformity of Clinical Head, Head and Neck, and Body Coils in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

Introduction Signal intensity uniformity in a magnetic resonance (MR) image indicates how well the MR imaging (MRI) system represents an object. One of the major sources of image non-uniformity in high-field MRI scanners is inhomogeneity of radio-frequency coil. The aim of this study was to investigate non-uniformity in head, head and neck, and body coils and compare the obtained results to det...
