چکیده

MRI of thoracic cord in tropical spastic paraparesis Tropical spastic paraparesis (TSP) is a disease occurring in Afro-Caribbeans following HTLV-1 retro-virus infection. There is some evidence that the geographical and ethnic distribution ofHTLV-1 illness is even wider' and HTLV-1 associated myelopathy (HAM) in Japan is probably the same disorder. Abnormalities are found on MRI of the brain in both TSP23 and HAM.4 High signal areas are found in the brain similar to those in multiple sclerosis (MS), though they tend to be less extensive. The thoracic cord (on which the brunt ofthe pathological process falls) has been examined in only three patients, one of whom had atrophy.2 Since the clinical picture ofTSP may resemble that ofprogressive MS, we have made a systematic comparison of the MRI characteristics of the thoracic cord in the two conditions.

MRI-pathological correlate of brain lesions in a necropsy case of HTLV-I associated myelopathy.

A postmortem case of HTLV-I associated myelopathy (HAM)/tropical spastic paraparesis (TSP) with a history of remission and exacerbation of neurological signs and symptoms, resembling those of multiple sclerosis is reported. MRI analysis revealed lesions in the periventricular white matter in addition to atrophy of the thoracic spinal cord, characteristic of HAM/TSP. The cerebral periventricular...

MRI contributes to the differentiation between MS and HTLV-I associated myelopathy in British Columbian coastal natives.

BACKGROUND Human T-cell lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I)-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP) in British Columbian Coastal Natives has, to date, been a clinical and laboratory diagnosis. However, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) abnormalities have been well-described in other populations in which HAM/TSP is endemic. METHODS In order to assess the usefulness of MRI as...

Two Babinski signs in seropositive (HAM) and seronegative tropical spastic paraparesis.

Tropical spastic paraparesis (TSP) may or may not be associated to HTLV-I antibodies and is usually characterized by clinical and pathological spinal cord abnormalities at thoracic levels. We present here five Brazilian patients who had typical chronic idiopathic spastic paraparesis; two of them were HTLV-I seropositive (HAM) and three HTLV-I seronegative (TSP) -associated-myelopathy. Three out...

Spinal Cord Kinking in Thoracic Myelopathy Caused by Ossification of the Ligamentum Flavum

BACKGROUND Ossification of the ligamentum flavum (OLF) is being increasingly recognized as a cause of thoracic myelopathy. This study was to describe a rare clinical entity of spinal cord kinking (SK) in thoracic myelopathy secondary to OLF. METHODS The data of 95 patients with thoracic myelopathy secondary to OLF were analyzed retrospectively. The incidence and location of SK were determined...

HTLV1-Associated Myelopathy Tropical Spastic Paraparesis Mechanism from System Virology Approach

In summary, our present system virology is confirmed current hypothesis about HAM/TSP pathogenesis with more details. It seems that Immune-dysregulation especially different cytokines expression in ACs individuals has key role in develop to HAM/TSP. In the other hand, HTLV-1 is successive intracellular pathogens which advantage from human host for hosting, replication and expansion in the human...
