چکیده

Most of this book discusses Fermi gases composed of alkali atoms. Since the first realization of a degenerate K Fermi gas in 1999, Li has been the only other fermionic atom to be cooled below the Fermi temperature. In this contribution we will discuss our recent results on cooling fermionic He below the Fermi temperature. This has not been performed with ground state He, but with He in the metastable 2 S1 state, which has an internal energy of 20 eV. Helium atoms in this metastable state are denoted by He* and have a lifetime of ∼ 8000 s, which is infinite for all practical purposes. He* atoms can be efficiently cooled with laser light at 1083nm and samples of ∼ 10 atoms of either isotope can be confined in a magneto-optical trap (MOT) at temperatures around 1mK. The density in a He* MOT is limited to ∼ 4 × 10 cm due to large losses associated with Penning ionization (PI) and associative ionization (AI):

The role of carrier gases in the production of metastable argon atoms in a rf discharge.

We investigate the role of carrier gases in the production of metastable argon atoms in a rf-driven discharge. The effects of different carrier gases (krypton, xenon, neon, and helium), carrier gas pressures, and rf discharge powers are examined. A xenon carrier gas provides the greatest metastable population of argon, yielding an optimal fractional metastable population of argon (Ar(*)/Ar) of ...

A buffer-gas cooled Bose-Einstein condensate

We report the creation of a Bose-Einstein condensate using buffer-gas cooling, the first realization of BEC using a broadly general method which relies neither on laser cooling nor unique atom-surface properties. Metastable helium (He*) is buffer-gas cooled, magnetically trapped, and evaporatively cooled to quantum degeneracy. 10 atoms are initially trapped, leading to Bose-Einstein condensatio...

Comparison of hollow cathode and Penning discharges for metastable He production

The production of helium 2 1S singlet metastable atoms has been investigated using a hollow cathode discharge and a Penning discharge, under dc discharge conditions. The density of metastable atoms was measured by atomic absorption using the 2 1S–3 1P transition (501.57 nm). A range of plasma currents, varying from 16 to 180 mA, and a range of pressures, from 100 mTorr to 5 Torr, were investiga...

Fermi-Bose and Bose-Bose K-Rb Quantum Degenerate Mixtures

We describe the properties of mixtures composed by potassium and rubidium atoms, simultaneously trapped in a magnetic potential. Potassium isotopes are cooled down to quantum degeneracy by means of sympathetic cooling with rubidium [1]. We can produce both a two-species Bose-Einstein condensate [2] mixing together Rb and K, and a degenerate system composed by a Fermi gas of K atoms and a Bose-E...

Efficient magneto-optical trapping of a metastable helium gas

This article presents a new experiment aiming at BEC of metastable helium atoms. It describes the design of a high flux discharge source of atoms and a robust laser system using a DBR diode coupled with a high power Yb doped fiber amplifier for manipulating the beam of metastable atoms. The atoms are trapped in a small quartz cell in an extreme high vacuum. The trapping design uses an additiona...
