چکیده

Levels of radiation exposure in Chilean altiplano primarily due to cosmic rays were measured with pocket gamma ray dosimeters and a handy neutron rem counter. Comparison data were also taken at Antofagasta, Santiago, Mitaka, and on board the aircrafts to/from the site. Significant enhancement of dose rates was found at the ALMA site: Measured gamma ray dose rate (including ∼ 0.45mSv yr−1 contribution of terrestrial gamma ray) was 3.14mSv yr−1 at Pampa La Bola, and 1.70mSv yr−1 at San Pedro de Atacama, respectively, whereas it was 0.99mSv yr−1 at Santiago. As for the neutron component, altitude dependence is severer: Measured neutron dose rates were 0.80mSv yr−1 at Pampa La Bola, and 0.25mSv yr−1 at San Pedro de Atacama, respectively, whereas it was 0.01mSv yr−1 at Santiago. These values are even higher than world average dose rates at comparable altitudes, probably reflecting enhancement of incoming primary cosmic rays near the South Atlantic Anomaly. After correction for the effects of solar activity and indoor shielding, we estimate the occupational exposure of an 8–6 turno employee to be 2.0mSv yr−1, which exceeds that of a typical worker engaged in nuclear fuel cycle.

ALMA Memo No. 448 UV intensity near AOS and OSF

UV intensity near the AOS and OSF sites in northern Chile was measured with handheld UVA and UVB radiometers and was compared with that taken at Socorro AOC, Nobeyama, and Mitaka. Typical UVA opacity was about 0.4 at Pampa La Bola near the AOS site, about 0.6 both at San Pedro de Atacama near the OSF site and at Nobeyama, and about 0.7 at Mitaka (best conditions), respectively. The UVA intensit...

Evaluation of Radiation Exposure Pattern and Radiation Absorbed Dose Resulting from Occupational Exposure of Anesthesiologists to Ionizing Radiation

Introduction: Little information is available concerning the radiation exposure of anesthesiologists, and no such data have previously been collected in Iran. This prospective study was performed to determine the amount of radiation exposure of anesthesiologists for the purpose of assessing whether or not dangerous levels of radiation exposures were being reached, and to identify factors that c...

Is it time to shed some light on the black box of health policies regarding the inhabitants of the high background radiation areas of Ramsar?

Although there are substantial experimental, epidemiological and clinical evidences that high doses of ionizing radiation cause cancer and other detrimental biological effects, the health effects of human exposure to chronic low dose radiation exposures are still poorly known. People in some areas around the world live in dwellings with radiation and radon levels as much as more than 2...
