Towards cheaper intravenous nutrition.
نویسنده
چکیده
During these times of financial restraint it is beholden on all clinicians critically to evaluate their therapeutic methods with regard to cost effectiveness. Take, for example, intravenous nutrinion. Can it be justified in terms of clinical benefit and, if so, might not the costs be reduced without compromising the effectiveness of the regimens employed? Intravenous feeding is expensive. The solutions and additives alone cost between £50 and £70 a day, which amounts to almost £100 000 in any hospital feeding six patients at any one time over a year. Furthermore, this expenditure does not include the material costs of administering these solutions or the substantial labour costs incurred by medical, nursing, and pharmacy staff. Clearly, if the number of patients receiving intravenous nutrition could be reduced then substantial savings in hospital expenditure could be achieved.

Comparison of the Effects of Intralipid 10% and 20% on Peripheral Catheter Ablation in a Pediatric Intensive Care Unit
Background: Energy deficit is a common and serious problem in pediatric intensive care units. Parenteral nutrition, either alone or in combination with enteral nutrition, can improve nutrient delivery in critically ill patients by preventing or correcting the energy deficit and improving the outcomes. Intralipid 10% and 20% are lipid emulsions, widely used in parenteral nutrition. Despite sever...

In the majority (80%) of patients with acute pancreatitis, the disease is self limiting and, after a few days of withholding feeding and intravenous administration of fluids, patients can again be normally fed orally. In a small percentage of patients, the disease progresses to severe necrotic pancreatitis, with an intense systemic inflammatory response and often with multiple organ dysfunction...

BACKGROUND Reticuloendothelial system function is impaired in humans receiving lipid regimens. AIMS To evaluate the effects of long term administration of long chain triglyceride emulsions on reticuloendothelial system function. METHODS Splenic function and tuftsin activity were measured in 20 patients on intravenous nutrition for intestinal failure, 20 patients with Crohn's disease who wer...
متن کاملThe inverse relationship between food price and energy density: is it spurious?
OBJECTIVE An important debate in the literature is whether or not higher energy-dense foods are cheaper than less energy-dense foods. The present communication develops and applies an easy statistical test to determine if the relationship between food price and energy density is an artifact of how the data units are constructed (i.e. is it 'spurious' or 'real'?). DESIGN After matching data on...
