Maternal Food Consumption and Foetal Growth in Merino Sheep

چکیده

The intake of a pelleted diet offered ad libitum to pregnant Merino ewes between the 90th and 140th days of pregnancy was influenced by their previous nutritional history and degree of body fatness. Marked compensatory intake occurred in previously ill-fed ewes whereas the intake of well-fed fat ewes carrying single foetuses declined slightly as pregnancy proceeded. The body weights of single foetuses after 90 and 140 days of gestation were affected to a small extent by the level of maternal feed intake in early and late pregnancy. Male foetuses were significantly heavier than females at 90 days.

The effects of cold exposure of pregnant sheep on foetal plasma nutrients, hormones and birth weight.

1. Five pregnant sheep, with indwelling catheters positioned for withdrawal of maternal right-atrial and foetal arterial blood, were exposed for 2 h to neutral and to cold (-10 and wool-clipped) environmental temperatures. Acute maternal cold exposure increased the concentrations of glucose, glycerol and non-esterified fatty acids in maternal plasma and increased the concentration of glucose in...

A genome-wide scan to detect signatures of recent selection in Australian Merino sheep

Domestication and selection are processes that conserve the pattern of genetic diversities between and within populations. Identification of genomic regions that are targets of selection for phenotypic traits is one of the main aims of research in animal genetics. An approach for identifying divergently selected regions of the genome is to compare FST values among loci to estimate the genetic v...

The influence of maternal nutrition on ovine foetal growth.

In recent years considerable information on ovine foetal growth has emanated from both medical research, in which the sheep has been used as a convenient experimental animal, and agricultural research, in which the main interest has been in improving the efficiency of the sheep as a meat and wool producer (Alexander, 1974). In the present paper an attempt is made to draw together some of the ma...

Consumption of a high-salt diet by ewes during pregnancy alters nephrogenesis in 5-month-old offspring.

Maternal nutrition during pregnancy can affect kidney development in the foetus, which may lead to adverse consequences in the mature kidney. It was expected that high-salt intake by pregnant ewes would lead to a reduction in foetal glomerular number but that the ovine kidney would adapt to maintain homoeostasis, in part by increasing the size of each glomerulus. Merino ewes that were fed eithe...

Maternal and Foetal Cardiovascular Effects of the Anaesthetic Alfaxalone in 2-Hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin in the Pregnant Ewe

The objective of this study was to determine the pharmacodynamics effects of the anaesthetic alfaxalone in 2-hydroxypropyl- β -cyclodextrin in pregnant sheep after the intravenous injection of a 2 mg/kg weight dose. Six pregnant Ripollesa sheep, weighing 47.1 ± 4.4 kg, were used. Twenty-four hours after instrumentation, sheep were anaesthetized with intravenous alfaxalone in cyclodextrin. Time ...
