Structure and reactivity of the N-acetyl-cysteine radical cation and anion: does radical migration occur?

The structure and reactivity of the N-acetyl-cysteine radical cation and anion were studied using ion-molecule reactions, infrared multi-photon dissociation (IRMPD) spectroscopy, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The radical cation was generated by first nitrosylating the thiol of N-acetyl-cysteine followed by the homolytic cleavage of the S-NO bond in the gas phase. IRMPD spect...

Radical Generation from the Gas-Phase Activation of Ionized Lipid Ozonides

Reaction products from the ozonolysis of unsaturated lipids at gas-liquid interfaces have the potential to significantly influence the chemical and physical properties of organic aerosols in the atmosphere. In this study, the gas-phase dissociation behavior of lipid secondary ozonides is investigated using ion-trap mass spectrometry. Secondary ozonides were formed by reaction between a thin fil...

Ion-molecule reactions as probes of gas-phase structures of peptides and proteins.

A review with over 100 references describes the recent applications of ion-molecule reactions to the study of gas-phase protonated peptides and proteins. The topic is focused specifically on the proton transfer and hydrogen-deuterium exchange reactions of amino acids, peptides, and proteins. A brief background is given of the various methods used for assigning proton affinities and gas-phase ba...

SHORT COMMUNICATION Electron Transfer Dissociation of Peptide Anions

Ion/ion reactions of multiply deprotonated peptide anions with xenon radical cations result in electron abstraction to generate charge-reduced peptide anions containing a free-radical site. Peptide backbone cleavage then occurs by hydrogen radical abstraction from a backbone amide N to facilitate cleavage of the adjacent COC bond, thereby producing aand x-type product ions. Introduction of free...

Structure and reactivity of homocysteine radical cation in the gas phase studied by ion-molecule reactions and infrared multiple photon dissociation.

The reactivity of the cysteine (Cys) and homocysteine (Hcy) radical cation was studied using ion-molecule reactions. The radical cations were generated via collision-induced dissociation (CID) of their S-nitrosylated precursors. Cleavage of the S-NO bond led to the formation of the radical initially positioned on the sulfur atom. The reactions of the radical cations with dimethyl disulfide reve...
