چکیده

We report the observation of four gyrfalcon (Falco rusticolus) nests and several adults south of the previously recognized southern limit of the species’ breeding distribution in eastern North America. Our southernmost observation extends the known breeding range approximately 400 km to the south. The northern forest tundra biome could delineate the southern limit to the breeding range of the gyrfalcon.

Use of Large-scale, Multi-species Surveys to Monitor Gyrfalcon and Ptarmigan Populations

—We evaluated the ability of three large-scale, multi-species surveys in the Arctic to provide information on abundance and habitat relationships of Gyrfalcons (Falco rusticolus) and ptarmigan. The Program for Regional and International Shorebird Monitoring (PRISM) has surveyed birds widely across the arctic regions of Canada and Alaska since 2001. The Arctic Coastal Plain survey has collected ...

Genetics of plumage color in the Gyrfalcon (Falco rusticolus): analysis of the melanocortin-1 receptor gene.

Genetic variation at the melanocortin-1 receptor (MC1R) gene is correlated with melanin color variation in a few reported vertebrates. In Gyrfalcon (Falco rusticolus), plumage color variation exists throughout their arctic and subarctic circumpolar distribution, from white to gray and almost black. Multiple color variants do exist within the majority of populations; however, a few areas (e.g., ...

NEST-SiTE FiDEliTy AND DiSPERSAl OF GyRFAlCONS ESTimATED by NONiNvASivE GENETiC SAmPliNG

We used feathers from adult Gyrfalcons (Falco rusticolus) molted in breeding territories and blood samples from nestlings to document nest-site fidelity and dispersal of breeding adults and juveniles at three areas 100– 350 km apart in yukon Delta National Wildlife Refuge, Alaska, 2003–2007. We used genotypes from seven polymorphic microsatellite loci that provided a mean probability of identit...

Falcons pursue prey using visual motion cues: new perspectives from animal-borne cameras.

This study reports on experiments on falcons wearing miniature videocameras mounted on their backs or heads while pursuing flying prey. Videos of hunts by a gyrfalcon (Falco rusticolus), gyrfalcon (F. rusticolus)/Saker falcon (F. cherrug) hybrids and peregrine falcons (F. peregrinus) were analyzed to determine apparent prey positions on their visual fields during pursuits. These video data were...

Organochlorine Compounds in the Plasma of Peregrine Falcons and Gyrfalcons Nesting in Greenland

Levels of organochlorine compounds in the blood plasma of after-second-year female peregrine falcons (Falco peregrinus) were determined from samples collected from southern Greenland in 1985 and western Greenland from 1983 to 1989, and from adult and nestling gyrfalcons (Falco rusticolus) from western Greenland in 1989 and 1990. Samples were taken during nesting. Levels of p,p'-DDE (DDE) in per...
