چکیده

1593 Apnea Positive Pressure Long-term Efficacy Study—Kushida et al INTRODUCTION Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common sleep-related breathing disorder estimated to affect more than 14 million Americans1; comprehensive data are lacking on the impact of OSA on the neurocognitive domains of attention and psychomotor function, learning and memory, and executive and frontal-lobe function. Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy is in widespread use,2 yet its efficacy in providing significant long-term neurocognitive and other functional benefits to OSA patients has not been systematically investigated. Effects of continuous positive airway pressure on neurocognitive function in obstructive sleep apnea patients: The Apnea Positive Pressure Long-term Efficacy Study (APPLES).

STUDY OBJECTIVE To determine the neurocognitive effects of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy on patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS The Apnea Positive Pressure Long-term Efficacy Study (APPLES) was a 6-month, randomized, double-blind, 2-arm, sham-controlled, multicenter trial conducted at 5 U.S. university, hospital, or private pract...

Continuous positive airway pressure improves gait control in severe obstructive sleep apnoea: A prospective study

STUDY AIM Severe obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) can lead to neurocognitive alterations, including gait impairments. The beneficial effects of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) on improving excessive daytime sleepiness and daily functioning have been documented. However, a demonstration of CPAP treatment efficacy on gait control is still lacking. This study aims to test the hypothesis t...

Effects of continuous positive airway pressure on neurocognitive architecture and function in patients with obstructive sleep apnoea: study protocol for a multicentre randomised controlled trial

OBJECTIVES Many clinical studies have indicated that obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA), the most common chronic sleep disorder, may affect neurocognitive function, and that treatment for continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) has some neurocognitive protective effects against the adverse effects of OSA. However, the effects of CPAP treatment on neurocognitive architecture and function remain u...

Influence of continuous positive airway pressure on outcomes of rehabilitation in stroke patients with obstructive sleep apnea.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE In stroke patients, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is associated with poorer functional outcomes than in those without OSA. We hypothesized that treatment of OSA by continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) in stroke patients would enhance motor, functional, and neurocognitive recovery. METHODS This was a randomized, open label, parallel group trial with blind assessmen...

Changes in Neurocognitive Architecture in Patients with Obstructive Sleep Apnea Treated with Continuous Positive Airway Pressure

BACKGROUND Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a chronic, multisystem disorder that has a bidirectional relationship with several major neurological disorders, including Alzheimer's dementia. Treatment with Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) offers some protection from the effects of OSA, although it is still unclear which populations should be targeted, for how long, and what the effects ...
