Livestock Super Farms

چکیده
Farmers will have to increase production levels to provide food for a growing population, while meeting the current and future welfare and environmental targets and legislation. There has been a steady decline in the number of farms, farmers and livestock in the UK, with an increase in the average farm size. Proposed UK super farms are smaller in scale compared to some of the world’s largest livestock facilities. They may have potential impacts (both good and bad) for animal welfare and the environment.

Metapopulation dynamics of Escherichia coli O157 in cattle: an exploratory model.
Livestock movement is thought to be a risk factor for the transmission of infectious diseases of farm animals. Simple mathematical models were constructed for the transmission of Escherichia coli serogroup O157 between Scottish cattle farms, and the models were used in a preliminary exploration of factors contributing to the levels of infection reported in the field. The results suggest that ca...
متن کاملMixed crop-livestock systems: an economic and environmental-friendly way of farming?
Intensification and specialisation of agriculture in developed countries enabled productivity to be improved but had detrimental impacts on the environment and threatened the economic viability of a huge number of farms. The combination of livestock and crops, which was very common in the past, is assumed to be a viable alternative to specialised livestock or cropping systems. Mixed crop-livest...

Seroprevalence of brucellosis in 1473 cattle and 481 buffaloes from various Government and 286 cattle and 223 buffaloes from different private livestock farms was carried out by performing Rose Bengal plate test (RBPT) and serum agglutination test (SAT). RBPT recorded the seroprevalence as 14.70% in cattle and 15.38% in buffaloes at Government and 18.53% in cattle and 35.40% in buffaloes at var...
متن کاملAnalyzing farming systems diversity: a case study in south-western France
The huge changes in agricultural activities, which may be amplified by the forthcoming Common Agriculture Policy reform, call the future of crop-livestock systems into question and hence the impact of these changes on landscapes and biodiversity. We analyzed relationships between agriculture, landscape and biodiversity in south-western France. The study area covered about 4,000 ha and included ...
متن کاملSimulating the Distribution of Individual Livestock Farms and Their Populations in the United States: An Example Using Domestic Swine (Sus scrofa domesticus) Farms
Livestock distribution in the United States (U.S.) can only be mapped at a county-level or worse resolution. We developed a spatial microsimulation model called the Farm Location and Agricultural Production Simulator (FLAPS) that simulated the distribution and populations of individual livestock farms throughout the conterminous U.S. Using domestic pigs (Sus scrofa domesticus) as an example spe...
