Atmospheric Moons Galileo Would Have Loved

چکیده
In the spirit of the symposium and the theme of the session of this presentation, 7 “Our solar system after Galileo, the grand vision,” I review briefly a relatively recently discovered 8 phenomenon in the solar system − existence of atmospheres on certain moons, including Io, one 9 of the four moons Galileo discovered four centuries ago. The origin of such atmospheres is 10 discussed, and comparisons are made between various gassy moons. 11

The Galilean Moons and the Nature of their Magnetic Fields
The Galileo spacecraft’s magnetometer data allowed for an understanding of the Galilean satellites’ internal magnetic fields. My objective was to learn the nature of these fields and see if they are consistent with geological and observational data by reviewing all relevant papers and seeking parallels or inconsistencies between them. The results show that Europa and Callisto have internal brin...
متن کاملImpact-Generated Dust Clouds Surrounding the Galilean Moons
Tenuous dust clouds of Jupiter’s Galilean moons Io, Europa, Ganymede and Callisto have been detected with the in-situ dust detector on board the Galileo spacecraft. The majority of the dust particles have been sensed at altitudes below five radii of these lunar-sized satellites. We identify the particles in the dust clouds surrounding the moons by their impact direction, impact velocity, and ma...
متن کامل10 Simple Rules for the Care and Feeding of Scientific Data
Introduction In the early 1600s, Galileo Galilei turned a telescope toward Jupiter. In his log book each night, he drew to-scale schematic diagrams of Jupiter and some oddly-moving points of light near it. Galileo labeled each drawing with the date. Eventually he used his observations to conclude that the Earth orbits the Sun, just as the four Galilean moons orbit Jupiter. History shows Galileo...

Watershed moments, upon which the fates of nations, continents, or peoples hinge, are rare in human history. The Battle of Salamis in 480 BC, the Battle of Zama in 202 BC (my sympathies are with Carthage), the defeat of the Moors by Charles Martel in AD 732, the Sack of Constantinople in 1204, the death of Ogedei Khan as his armies approached Wien (Vienna) in 1241, the coming of the Black Plagu...
متن کاملEuropa and Callisto Induced or intrinsic fields in a periodically varying plasma environment
Magnetometer data from four Galileo passes by the Jovian moon Europa and three passes by Callisto are used to interpret the properties of the plasma surrounding these moons and to identify internal sources of magnetic perturbations. Near Europa the measurements are consistent with a plasma rich in pickup ions whose source is freshly ionized neutrals sputtered off of the moon's surface or atmosp...
