Ischaemic and postischaemic paraesthesiae in motor neurone disease.

چکیده

In a recent study of ischaemic and post-ischaemic paraesthesiae in the upper limb (Poole, 1956a) it was noted that the responses in subjects with advanced motor neurone disease differed from those in normal subjects. This observation seemed relevant to the study both of motor neurone disease itself, and of factors which determine the production of paraesthesiae in normal and other diseased states, e.g., polyneuritis (Poole, 1956b). This report is to amplify the original observations and to draw attention to a simple clinical investigation from which useful information may accrue. For a general description of ischaemic and post-ischaefmic paraesthesiae reference may be made to previous studies in this field (Lewis, Pickering, and Rothschild, 1931; Zotterman, 1933; Kugelberg, 1944; Weddell and Sinclair, 1947; Merrington and Nathan, 1949). The abbreviations employed here are I.P. for ischaemic paraesthesiae and P.I.P. for the pricking and tingling elements of post-ischaemic paraesthesiae.

Studies of ischaemic and post-ischaemic paraesthesiae in normal subjects and in sciatica.

The occurrence of paraesthesiae during occlusion of the circulation to a limb (ischaemic paraesthesiae) and after its restoration (post-ischaemic paraesthesiae) is well recognized. The ischaemic paraesthesiae consist of a soft, diffuse, tingling sensation felt at the periphery of the limb and lasting only a few minutes. The post-ischaemic paraesthesiae, which have been well demarcated by Merrin...

Motor neurone disease. An abnormality of nerve metabolism.

Seneviratne and Peiris, 1968a, b) have revived interest in the performance of peripheral nerves and muscles under ischaemic conditions, and in connection with this work there is evidence that the normal differences in aerobic and anaerobic metabolism in muscle fibres is influenced by the type of motor neurone supplying them. The demonstration by Gregerson (1968) and Seneviratne and Peiris (1968...

Ischaemic and postischaemic paraesthesiae in polyneuritis.

Paraesthesiae consequent on peripheral nerve compression or general limb ischaemia have attracted interest for over a century (Bastien and Vulpian, 1855), but their value in the study of nervous disease remains little explored. In a recent study (Poole, 1956) the paraesthesiae provoked in normal subjects by a standard ischaemic test were investigated in order to provide a background against whi...

Ischaemic and post-ischaemic paraesthesiae; normal responses in the upper limb with special reference to the effect of age.

Paraesthesiae consequent on peripheral nerve compression or general limb ischaemia have long attracted interest, and many features suggest their possible value in the study of peripheral nerve disorders. However, it is not certain if they are an essential feature of normal nervous function or if any significance can be attached to their absence. To clarify this and to determine features suitabl...

Improved functional recovery by ischaemic preconditioning is not mediated by adenosine in the globally ischaemic isolated rat heart.

OBJECTIVE A brief period of ischaemia (5 min) and reperfusion (5 min), prior to a longer period of ischaemia and reperfusion, has been shown to reduce the extent of injury (necrosis, arrhythmias, or postischaemic contractile malfunction) caused by a subsequent longer period of ischaemia and reperfusion. Adenosine has been identified as a factor in the protection afforded against regional tissue...
