Growth of Bacteroides fragilis in rabbit tracheal organ culture: anaerobiosis and tissue respiration.

چکیده
Rabbit tracheal explants supporting growth of inoculated Bacteroides fragilis in air were shown to keep low oxygen tension. Treating the explants with sodium azide induced high oxygen tension and arrested reversibly the growth of B. fragilis.

Culture and decontamination methods affecting enumeration of phages infecting Bacteroides fragilis in sewage.
A new medium has been adapted for the growth of Bacteroides fragilis so that its phages can be recovered from environmental samples, and its efficiency has been assessed. Polyvinylidene difluoride membranes allow significantly higher recoveries among different membrane filters used to decontaminate the samples. In all cases, a number of phages remain in the filters and a percentage of them can ...
متن کاملDetection of enterotoxigenic Bacteroides fragilis by PCR.
Strains of enterotoxigenic Bacteroides fragilis (ETBF) are associated with diarrhea in young farm animals and, at least in particular settings, in children. Enterotoxin production by ETBF is currently detected by a tissue culture assay with HT-29 cells. We have developed a PCR assay based on the detection of the enterotoxin gene to identify ETBF in culture and in stool samples. Overall, 113 bac...
متن کاملInhibitory effect of fumarate on growth of Bacteroides fragilis.
The growth of the strictly anaerobic bacterium Bacteroides fragilis on glucose was inhibited in the presence of fumarate. The molar growth yields for glucose were 29.6 and 20.0g of dry cells/mol of glucose in the absence and presence of fumarate, respectively. In the culture with fumarate, the ratio of lactate production increased and that of succinate was slightly decreased.Fumarate addition also ...
متن کاملRespiration of Microbiota-Derived 1,2-propanediol Drives Salmonella Expansion during Colitis
Intestinal inflammation caused by Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium increases the availability of electron acceptors that fuel a respiratory growth of the pathogen in the intestinal lumen. Here we show that one of the carbon sources driving this respiratory expansion in the mouse model is 1,2-propanediol, a microbial fermentation product. 1,2-propanediol utilization required intestinal in...
متن کاملInfluence of pH, nutrient availability, and growth rate on amine production by Bacteroides fragilis and Clostridium perfringens.
Dimethylamine, methylamine, propylamine, and pyrrolidine were the major amines formed by Bacteroides fragilis NCDO 2217 during the active phase of growth in batch culture. Production of these metabolites was strongly pH dependent and was optimal under acidic conditions (pH 6.0). Low pH also favored the formation of pyrrolidine, cadaverine, and dimethylamine by Clostridium perfringens C523, but ...
