Simultaneous measurements with 3D PIV and Acoustic Doppler Velocity Profiler

چکیده
Simultaneous velocity measurements were taken using Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) and an Acoustic Doppler Velocity Profiler (ADVP) in a sharp open-channel bend with an immobile gravel bed. The PIV measures 3D velocity vectors in a vertical plane (~40cm x 20cm) at a frequency of 7.5 Hz, whereas the ADVP measures 3D velocity vectors in a vertical profile with a frequency of 31.25 Hz. The paper reports simultaneous measurements with both instruments positioned in the same location. Both instruments resolve accurately spatial structures of the complex mean flow fields characterized by small velocities of the order of 0.01 ms -1 , such as the outer-bank secondary flow cell and the secondary flow cell in the zone of flow separation at the inner bank. PIV measurements of the mean velocities are of better quality near the flow boundaries and the spatial distribution of data allows investigation of the temporal behaviour of secondary flow structures. Power spectra and time-series of quasi-instantaneous velocities demonstrate that the ADVP measures turbulence accurately, whilst PIV measurements of turbulence suffer from the lower temporal resolution and the higher noise levels. The results presented in this paper demonstrate that the combined application of PIV and ADVP allows investigation complex 3D flows in greater detail than is possible from a single instrument. 33rd IAHR Congress: Water Engineering for a Sustainable Environment Copyright c © 2009 by International Association of Hydraulic Engineering & Research (IAHR) ISBN: 978-94-90365-01-1 33rd IAHR Congress: Water Engineering for a Sustainable Environment

The effects of air bubbles
We report on experiments on the effects of air bubbles on ultrasound velocity measurements in fluids. We used an acoustic Doppler velocimeter system for measuring the three velocity components in a single point and an acoustic Doppler velocimetry profiler system for measuring axial velocity in several points along the beam. The results suggest that both systems essentially measure the velocity ...
متن کاملEstimating ocean heat transports and submarine melt rates in Sermilik Fjord, Greenland, using lowered acoustic Doppler current profiler (LADCP) velocity profiles
Submarine melting at the ice–ocean interface is a significant term in the mass balance of marine-terminating outlet glaciers. However, obtaining direct measurements of the submarine melt rate, or the ocean heat transport towards the glacier that drives this melting, has been difficult due to the scarcity of observations, as well as the complexity of oceanic flows. Here we present a method that ...

A modified beam-to-earth transformation to measure short-wavelength internal waves with an Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP)
The algorithm used to transform velocity signals from beam coordinates to earth coordinates in an Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler relies on the assumption that the currents are uniform over the horizontal distance separating the beams. This condition may be violated by (nonlinear) internal waves, which can have wavelengths as small as 100 − 200m. In this case, the standard algorithm combines ...
متن کامل7r.7 Simultaneous Wind Velocity Estimation and Dual-polarization Measurements of Precipitation and Clouds by an S-band Profiler
The Transportable Atmospheric RAdar (TARA) is an S-band FM-CW profiler that is located at Cabauw, The Netherlands. It is a part of European Union sponsored CESAR Observatory, Russchenberg et al. (2005). The TARA measurements can be carried out in single polarization mode, alternating polarization mode and/or wind measurement mode, that employs two offset beams. Simultaneous use of alternating p...
