Plasma Wave Observations During Electron Beam Experiments at High Altitudes

چکیده
Electron beam experiments on the nearly geosynchronous P78—2 satellite conducted in 1979 resulted in observations of intense radiation near the local electron gyrofrequency. These signals resembled naturally occuring fCe waves during the same period. The amplitude of the stimulated waves depended upon beam parameters. During 50 eV beam operations, current levels of 10 pA produced strong emissions. Current levels of 1 pA and 100 pA did not. These emissions correspond in time to previously reported observations of electron distributions which suggest heating of the local thermal plasma. Sufficient power is in the observed emissions to explain the heated electron distributions observed during the experiments.

Electron Beam Experiments at High Altitudes
Experiments with the electron gun on the SCATHA satellite produced evidence of beam-plasma interactions, and heating of the low energy electrons around the satellite. These experiments were conduct ed near geosynchronous orbit, in the dusk bulge, and plasma sheet, with one short operation in the lobe regions, providing a range of ambient plasma densities. The electron gun was operated at 50 eV,...
متن کاملExcitation of Langmuir Wave Turbulence by High - Frequency ( HF ) Pump Waves Over Gakona
Investigated in this thesis are the excitation and observation of Langmuir wave turbulence caused by the parametric decay instability (PDI) in high-frequency space plasma heating experiments conducted at the NSF/DoD High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program (HAARP) facility in Gakona, Alaska during the spring and summer of 2006. The PDI is the decay of an electromagnetic (EM) wave into an ...
متن کاملKinetic Theory of the Alfvén Wave Acceleration of Auroral Electrons
Recent observations have indicated that in addition to the classical “inverted-V” type electron acceleration, auroral electrons often have a field-aligned distribution that is broad in energy and sometimes shows time dispersion indicating acceleration at various altitudes up the field line. Such acceleration is not consistent with a purely electrostatic potential drop, and suggests a wave heati...
متن کاملDual-beam ELF wave generation as a function of power, frequency, modulation waveform, and receiver location
[1] Dual-beam ELF wave generation experiments performed at the High-frequency Active Auroral Research Program (HAARP) HF transmitter are used to investigate the dependence of the generated ELF wave magnitude on HF power, HF frequency, modulation waveform, and receiver location. During the experiments, two HF beams transmit simultaneously: one amplitude modulated (AM) HF beam modulates the condu...
متن کاملLarge amplitude solitary waves in and near the Earth’s magnetosphere, magnetopause and bow shock: Polar and Cluster observations
Solitary waves with large electric fields (up to 100’s of mV/m) have been observed throughout the magnetosphere and in the bow shock. We discuss observations by Polar at high altitudes (∼ 4–8RE), during crossings of the plasma sheet boundary and cusp, and new measurements by Polar at the equatorial magnetopause and by Cluster near the bow shock, in the cusp and at the plasma sheet boundary. We ...
