Intra-seasonal Oscillations (ISO) of zonal-mean meridional winds and temperatures as measured by UARS

چکیده
Based on an empirical analysis of measurements with the High Resolution Doppler Imager (HRDI) on the UARS spacecraft in the upper mesosphere (95 km), persistent and regular intra-seasonal oscillations (ISO) with periods of about 2 to 4 months have recently been reported in the zonal-mean meridional winds. Similar oscillations have also been discussed independently in a modeling study, and they were attributed to wave-mean-flow interactions. The observed and modeled meridional wind ISOs were largely confined to low latitudes. We report here on an analysis of concurrent UARS temperature measurements, which produces oscillations similar to those seen in the meridional winds. Although the temperature oscillations are observed at lower altitudes (55 km), their phase variations with latitude are qualitatively consistent with the inferred properties seen in the meridional winds and thus provide independent evidence for the existence of ISOs in the mesosphere.

Seasonal variabilities of low-latitude mesospheric winds
Observations of mesospheric winds over a period of four years with the partial re ̄ection radar at Tirunelveli (8.7°N, 77.8°E), India, are presented in this study. The emphasis is on describing seasonal variabilities in mean zonal and meridional winds in the altitude region 70±98 km. The meridional winds exhibit overall transequatorial ̄ow associated with dierential heating in the Northern and ...

Meridional diurnal tidal winds derived as described by Khattatov et al. [this issue] from the high-resolution Doppler imager (HRDI) data are used in the linearized tidal equations to solve for the diurnal tidal oscillations in the zonal and vertical velocity, pressure, temperature, and dissipation in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere. The resulting monthly mean latitude-altitude cross secti...
متن کاملDiurnal variations of temperature and winds inferred from TIMED and UARS measurements
Owing to their sampling properties in local solar time, both the TIMED and UARS spacecrafts provide the opportunity to quantitatively study the mesospheric thermal tides. The information though is limited because it takes the TIMED instruments 2 months to cover the full range of 24 hours, almost twice as long as UARS. We present here the results of an analysis, in which the seasonal and global-...
متن کاملMean winds of the mesosphere and lower thermosphere at 52N in the period 1988–2000
A meteor radar in the UK (near 52 N) has been used to measure the mean winds of the mesosphere/lowerthermosphere (MLT) region over the period 1988–2000. The seasonal course and interannual variability is characterised and comparisons are made with a number of models. Annual mean wind trends were found to be +0.37 ms−1 yr−1 for the zonal component and +0.157 ms−1 yr−1 for the meridional componen...

The high-resolution Doppler imager (HRDI) instrument on board the upper atmosphere research satellite measures global winds in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere on a day-to-day basis. The horizontal coverage of the HRDI data is excellent and provides a unique opportunity to study global-scale dynamic phenomena; however, the local time resolution and coverage are limited because of the natur...
