Urinary tract infection associated with indwelling catheters in a intensive care unit: a preventive approach
نویسندگان
چکیده
Introduction Urinary tract infection when associated with bladder catheterization delay is one of the most common causes of infection related to health care, accounting for 40% of the incidence. Much of microorganisms that contaminate the drainage system stems from inadequate aseptic technique and hygiene oversights in the microbiota of the perineal and perianal region. It is an infection with high preventive potential, suggesting the need for educational interventions, with the purpose to train professionals, aimed at prevention and health promotion.

Reducing catheter-associated urinary tract infection in the critical care unit.
Changes in reimbursement policies have focused attention on the use of indwelling catheters in the critical care unit as well as their role in hospital-acquired urinary tract infections. Implementation of an evidence-based prevention program can significantly reduce both the prevalence of indwelling catheterization and the incidence of hospital-acquired catheter-associated urinary tract infecti...
متن کاملIncidence of Catheter Associated Urinary Tract Infection in Medical ICU in a Tertiary Care Hospital
Indwelling intravascular and urinary catheters are essential components of modern medical care. Unfortunately, indwelling devices significantly increase the risk of iatrogenic infection, particularly in an already fragile patient population. Most nosocomial infections in severely ill patients are associated with the very medical devices that provide life-sustaining care (Ihnsook Jeong et al., 2...
متن کاملReducing foley catheter device days in an intensive care unit: using the evidence to change practice.
The prolonged use of indwelling urinary catheters can lead to many complications, the most prevalent being urinary tract infections. These hospital-acquired infections can increase hospital costs, length of stay, and mortality rates. Evidence-based guidelines for the prevention of urinary tract infections are compared and discussed. Minimizing indwelling urinary catheter use is well-recognized ...
متن کاملPrevalence and Microbiological Profile of Catheter Associated Urinary Tract Infections: A Case Study in Secondary Care Hospital
Background and Objectives: Healthcare-associated infections is a major health care concern posing potentially serious negative impact on patient safety and outcome. In this paper, we report this microbiological profile and the prevalence of Catheter Associated Urinary Tract Infections (CAUTIs). Methods: This was a prospective observational study for...
متن کاملMicrobiological characteristics of yeasts isolated from urinary tracts of intensive care unit patients undergoing urinary catheterization.
We studied 70 intensive care unit patients to determine the incidence of nosocomial candiduria associated with indwelling urinary catheters and to assess microbiological characteristics of the yeasts. The yeasts were isolated, 13 of 17 in urine cultures and 4 of 17 in blood cultures, and colonization had occurred 3 days after the insertion of indwelling urinary catheters. For four strains the M...
